CLERMONT, Fla. --- The No. 24 Moravian College softball team won a pair of contests on its second day at the PFX Spring Games being played at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida with the Greyhounds defeating Emmanuel (Mass.) College, 9-2, and Monmouth (Ill.) College, 3-0, Monday.
The Hounds collected 10 hits in the win versus Emmanuel with sophomore outfielder Shannon Brogan going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Senior third baseman Madison Shaneberger and freshman pitcher Alexandria Scheeler were both 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored and Shaneberger also had a double.
In the circle, Scheeler improved to 2-0 on the season as she allowed two runs on six hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts in the first complete game of her collegiate career.
The Saints would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning but that would be all the offense that Scheeler and the Greyhounds would allow
The Blue and Grey cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning when Scheeler led off with a single and scored on a one-out RBI double by sophomore shortstop Maddisen Bieber.
Moravian took the lead with a five-run fourth inning. Junior third baseman Lauren Goetz led off the frame with a double and scored on an error that allowed freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy to reach base. Sophomore catcher Brooke Wehr hit an RBI ground out that chased Bieber across the plate after she reached on an error, and another error on the play allowed Cassidy to race home. Junior right fielder Emily Stanilious walked and eventually crossed the plate on an error that put Brogan on base, and Shaneberger connected on an RBI single to score Brogan with the final run of the inning.
The Hounds pushed three more runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth frame Stanilious drew a walk to start the inning and moved to third on a single by senior designated player Kat Spilman. Stanilious ended up being out at the plate while Spilman would score on an RBI double by Shaneberger. Scheeler finished off the scoring with a two-RBI single that scored Brogan, who had walked, and Shaneberger.
The second game of the day versus Monmouth saw junior pitcher Paige Lesher toss her first collegiate shutout as she scattered six hits and a walk to go with a strikeout as she improved to 1-1 on the season.
Moravian had six hits in the game with Spilman going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Hounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against the Scots. Stanilious, Spilman and Brogan all hit one-out singles to load the bases before Shaneberger connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to score Stanilious with the only run Moravian would need, and an error on the play also allowed Spilman to race home.
The Blue and Grey would add a run in the fifth frame when Cassidy singled to lead off the inning, and she scored on an RBI single by Spilman.
The Greyhounds have a day off tomorrow and will return to action at the Spring Game on Wednesday, March 6 with contests versus Wartburg (Iowa) College at 11:30 a.m. and Lebanon Valley College at 1:45 p.m.
