ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College softball team remained unbeaten and extended its winning streak to eight games with a sweep at Elizabethtown College Sunday in Landmark Conference action, winning by scores of 10-1 and 9-0 in six innings.
The Greyhounds, now 13-3 overall and 4-0 in Landmark Conference action, had 16 hits in the opening game with six of nine starters each collecting two hits. Senior second baseman Kaela Kane, senior third baseman Madison Shaneberger, junior right fielder Emily Stanilious and freshman center fielder Cameron Cassidy were all 2-for-3 in the game while senior left fielder Kat Spilman and sophomore designated player Shannon Brogan were both 2-for-4 with Spilman driving in two runs. Sophomore catcher Brooke Wehr was 2-for-5 and scored twice along with Stanilious and Brogan.
Junior Paige Lesher started in the circle in the opener and improved to 7-1 as she allowed an unearned run on three hits to go with two strikeouts in six innings of action. Sophomore Meghan Bauer tossed the final inning with three strikeouts.
Wehr led off the game with a single and scored on an RBI ground out by Spilman for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Blue Jays answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the first to knot the score at 1-1.
The Greyhounds scored a run in the top of the second to move back in front, 2-1. Shaneberger drew a walk to start the frame, and she raced home on an RBI single by Kane.
Moravian scored two times in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 4-1. Stanilious led off with a double and scored on a double off of Brogan's bat. Shaneberger followed with an RBI single and Brogan raced home from second.
The Hounds finished off the scoring with six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Wehr led off with a triple and scored on a throwing error on the play. Stanilious connected for her second double of the game and crossed the plate on an RBI single from Spilman. Sophomore shortstop Maddisen Bieber brought in Spilman with an infield RBI single while Brogan raced across the plate on a wild pitch. Freshman pinch hitter Briana DiCandeloro hit an RBI ground out to bring Bieber home while senior pinch hitter Julia DeMarco had an RBI single to bring in junior first baseman Lauren Goetz, who had drawn a walk.
The Blue and Grey added another 11 hits in the second game as Wehr went 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and a homer. Brogan and Shaneberger were each 2-for-3 in the contest with Shaneberger connecting on a home run while Bieber had a 2-for-4 game.
Bauer made the start in the circle and earned her first collegiate victory and shutout as she scattered three hits and five walks to go with eight strikeouts in the complete game.
Moravian jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Stanilious drew a one-out walk and eventually stole home on a play that had Brogan stealing second base after she had reached on an infield single.
The Greyhounds added three runs in the top of the second frame for a 4-0 edge. Shaneberger led off with a single and eventually scored on an RBI single by Wehr. Stanilious then reached on an error and both Wehr and Kane raced across the plate.
The Blue and Grey pushed the lead to 5-0 in the top of the third inning when Shaneberger connected on a two-out homer to left field, her second home run of the season.
Wehr made it a 6-0 game in the top of the fourth when she ripped a solo homer to center field, her fourth home run of the season.
The Hounds finished off the scoring with three runs in the top of the sixth to hit the NCAAs eight-run rule. Wehr led off with a single and Stanilious and Spilman followed with singles to load the bases. Brogan hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring in Wehr while Stanilious scored on a foul pop out by Goetz that was carried out of play for an extra base. Bieber finished the game with an RBI double to bring in pinch runner Victoria Smith.
Moravian is slated to return to action on Tuesday, March 26 when the squad hosts Penn State Berks in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Blue & Grey Field in Bethlehem.
