Volleyball Falls to Marymount in Championship Bracket Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team dropped a tough 25-22, 25-20, 25-27, 25-18 match to Marymount (Va.) University Saturday morning in the opening match of the championship bracket in the 12th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational in Johnston Hall.

The Hounds jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set and led 21-14 before the Saints, who had played until after 11:00 p.m. Friday night in the opening round of the tournament, ran off nine straight points to take control and a 1-0 lead. Moravian had the second set tied at 9-9 and was close the entire set.

The third set went back-and-forth with neither squad leading by three points. The Greyhounds were one point from winning the set when Marymount ran off three straight points. Moravian responded with a 3-0 run and the set victory. The fourth set remained close and was tied at 11-11 before Marymount began to pull away.

Junior middle blocker Victoria Bobyak and freshman outside hitter Mary Zacher paced the Greyhounds with 10 kills apiece with Zacher adding 13 digs and three service aces and Bobyak serving up a pair of aces.

Senior outside hitter Kelianne Comitalo and sophomore middle blocker Taylor Kornmann each had eight kills, and Comitalo also added 12 digs and two service aces while Kornmann made a team-high four blocks.

Junior setter Megan Szkolnicki ran Moravian's offense with 36 assists, and she also had five digs, three service aces, two kills and a pair of blocks. Freshman libero Jean Markovic contributed a match-high 20 digs while junior outside hitter Lauren Hostetler had 10 digs. Sophomore opposite hitter Jaclyn Smith added three kills for the Greyhounds.

Moravian will play its final match of the 12th Annual Greyhound Premiere at 2:00 p.m. when the squad takes on York College of Pennsylvania in the final match of the championship bracket.
