Volleyball Plays in Old Friends Crossover at Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team closed out its 2014 regular season at the Old Friends Crossover hosted by Messiah College Saturday as the Hounds fell to the host Falcons, 3-0, and Arcadia University, 3-2.

In the opening match against the host Falcons, the Greyhounds fell behind early in each set, falling 25-12, 25-10, 25-17. Freshman outside hitter Mary Zacher led the Hounds with six kills and seven digs while junior middle blocker Victoria Bobyak added two kills and a block. Junior setter Megan Szkolnicki contributed five assists and three digs while junior outside hitter Lauren Hoststler added seven digs.

Senior outside Kelianne Comitalo had a pair of service aces for the Greyhounds versus Messiah to go with three digs while freshman libero Jean Markovic added six digs. Junior defensive specialist Andrea Giardina contributed five digs while sophomore middle blocker Taylor Kornmann had four digs and a pair of blocks in the contest.

The Hounds opened their second match versus Arcadia with a 25-22 win in the first set, and the Greyhounds would take the second set 25-18. Moravian scored 25 points again in the third set but the Knights had 27 to win, and Arcadia took the fourth set, 25-11, to tie the contest. The squads would need more than the required 15 points to win the fifth, and deciding set as Arcadia posted a 17-15 win to rally for the match victory.

Zacher led the Hounds again with 15 kills and 19 digs to go with a pair of service aces while sophomore right side hitter Jaclyn Smith had 12 kills, four blocks and two digs. Kornmann added 11 kills and a pair of blocks while Bobyak contributed nine kills, five digs and four blocks.

Szkolnicki paced the Moravian offense in the match with 28 assists to go with four digs, three kills and a pair of blocks, and Szkolnicki became the seventh player in school history to go over 1,000 career assists, now with 1,019 after the contest.

Giardina had 16 assists, 14 digs and a team-high four service aces. Hostetler added a team-leading 28 digs with three assists and two service aces while Comitalo made 10 digs, five kills and two service aces. Freshman defensive specialist Ashton Galasso added eight digs for the Greyhounds.

Moravian will return to action as the fourth seed in the 2014 Landmark Conference Tournament as the Hounds head to top seed and No. 11 Juniata College for a semifinal match on Tuesday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Huntingdon.
