Volleyball Splits Matches at Buttermaker Tournament

ALLENTOWN, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Buttermaker Tournament at Muhlenberg College Friday as the Greyhounds defeated Baruch (N.Y.) College 26-28, 22-25, 25-18, 27-25, 15-5, in the opening round before falling to Allegheny College, 25-12, 25-22, 29-27, in the final match of the evening.

The Greyhounds had a pair of players in double-digit kills versus Baruch with sophomore middle blocker Taylor Kornmann contributing a match-high 21 kills to go with two blocks. Junior middle blocker Victoria Bobyak added 12 kills and three blocks for the Hounds while senior outside hitter Kelianne Comitalo, junior outside hitter Lauren Hostetler and sophomore opposite hitter Jaclyn Smith each had seven kills. Hostetler contributed 15 digs and three service aces while Smith had three blocks.

Junior setter Megan Szkolnicki ran the offense with a career-high 60 assists to go along with 12 digs and five blocks while freshman outside hitter Mary Zacher contributed eight kills, eight digs and two service aces. Freshman libero Jean Markovic posted a match-high 30 digs while junior defensive specialist Andrea Giardina made 11 digs.

Zacher would lead the Greyhounds against Allegheny with 12 kills to go along with 17 digs while Bobyak added nine kills. Kornmann had five kills in the match while Hostetler and Szkolnicki each had four kills as Hostetler added 10 digs and Szkolnicki contributed 33 assists, six digs and three service aces. Markovic posted a match-high 25 digs while Comitalo added 13 digs and a pair of kills for the Hounds.

Moravian will return to action on Saturday, September 6 in the second day of the Buttermaker Tournament in Pool BB with matches versus FDU-Florham at 10:00 a.m. and DeSales University at 12:00 p.m.
