Moravian Drops First Landmark Conference Game of 2024 at No. 7 Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. --- The Moravian University football team dropped its first Landmark Conference game of the 2024 season, falling to host No. 7 Susquehanna University, 49-34, Saturday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The River Hawks scored on a 55-yard on the first play of the game for a quick 7-0 lead
  • The Greyhounds answered back with a 17-play, 79-yard drive that included a pair of fourth down conversions. Senior quarterback Jared Jenkins found graduate student Jordan Bingham with a two-yard touchdown pass to cap the drive as Jenkins broke the school record with his 50th career touchdown pass. The Hounds missed the extra-point to make it 7-6 for Susquehanna with 8:28 left in the first quarter
  • Moravian got the ball back after just three plays as junior cornerback Shea Endean intercepted a pass and returned it 19 yards to set the Blue & Grey offense up at the Susquehanna 45-yard line
  • The Hounds took ten plays to cover the 45 yards to the end zone with Jenkins connecting with senior wide receiver Diego Del Castillo on a 16-yard touchdown pass on a fourth down play. Moravian went for the two-point conversion but missed on the pass to set the score at 12-7 with 3:15 to go in the first quarter
  • Susquehanna answered with a 42-yard touchdown pass on the second play of the second quarter as the River Hawks moved back in front, 14-12
  • The Blue & Grey would punt after three plays, but the Greyhounds got the ball back in two plays as junior linebacker Clay Basile forced a fumble that senior defensive back Isaiah Johnson recovered at the Susquehanna 40-yard line
  • Moravian converted the turnover into points again as Jenkins found Bingham with a three-yard touchdown strike to finish off a seven-play, 40-yard drive. Jenkins ran in the two-point conversion to give the Greyhounds a 20-14 lead with 7:41 to go in the second quarter
  • The River Hawks and Hounds exchanged punts before Susquehanna drove into the red zone late in the first half. Junior linebacker Chris Cacace finished the chance as he intercepted a pass at the one-yard line and returned it 11 yards. Moravian gained a first down and then ran out the clock to head to the locker room with a 20-14 advantage
  • The Hounds had the ball to begin the second half and punted after three plays
  • Susquehanna scored on a four-yard touchdown run after seven plays on a drive extended by a pair of Moravian penalties. The River Hawks' score gave them a 21-20 edge with 10:13 remaining in the third quarter
  • The Greyhounds were driving and into Susquehanna territory when Jenkins was intercepted
  • The River Hawks converted the miscue into a nine-yard run to make it 28-20 with 4:47 to go in the third period
  • Moravian moved the ball passed midfield again before turning the ball over on downs
  • Susquehanna extended its lead on the third play of the fourth quarter on a five-yard run to push the advantage to 35-20 with 13:47 remaining
  • The Hounds countered with a nine-play, 63-yard drive capped with Jenkins finding Bingham for the third time in the contest, this time from six yards. Senior quarterback Carter Hallgren tossed the two-point conversion to Bingham to cut the deficit to 35-28 with 10:28 to go
  • The River Hawks needed just three play to extend the lead to 42-28 on a five-yard touchdown run
  • Once again, Moravian countered with a 12-play, 65-yard drive as Jenkins and Bingham connected for the fourth time on a three-yard touchdown pass with 4:29 to go. The Blue & Grey missed on the two-point conversion to set the score at 42-34
  • Susquehanna pushed the lead right back to two scores with a 69-yard touchdown run to make it 49-34 with 3:30 to play
  • The Greyhounds moved into River Hawk territory before turning it over on downs. Moravian defense forced a punt, but the Blue & Grey were unable to score on the final drive of the game

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds had 442 yards of total offense on 96 plays with 299 yards in the air and 143 yard on the ground, and Moravian controlled the ball for 37:13 of the contest
  • Jenkins completed 35-of-57 passes, both career highs, for 299 yards, and he tied his career high with five touchdown passes for the third time against one interception. Jenkins now holds the school record with 54 career touchdown passes, and he ran for 40 yards on 14 carries against the River Hawks
  • Bingham had nine receptions for 83 yards with four touchdowns to tie the single game record for touchdown receptions and he is tied for fourth all-time with 16 career touchdown catches
  • Sophomore wide receiver Avery Koser grabbed nine passes for 51 yards to go with one yard on a rushing attempt while sophomore running back Isiah Rico had four receptions for 37 yards. Del Castillo added three catches for 38 yards and a score while freshman wide receiver Josh Ludlow had three receptions for 27 yards and one kickoff return for 27 yards
  • Freshman tight end Nick Haurin and sophomore wide receiver Nick Coffaro each pulled in one catch for ten yards
  • Graduate student Joey Richmond led the Moravian rushing attack with 48 yards on ten carries, and he added a pair of receptions for 21 yards while junior running back Camron Tinajero had three carries for 20 yards and two catches for 18 yards
  • Freshman running back Jed Bendekovits added two rushing attempts for nine yards and one catch for four yards while freshman quarterback Declan McCarthy had 21 yards on four carries and was 0-for-3 on passing attempts. Junior wide receiver Ryan Frinzi had four yards on one carry
  • Freshman wide receiver Jacob Sutton returned two kickoffs for 47 yards while freshman defensive back Antonio Rivera had one kickoff return for 13 yards
  • Freshman Jack Corrigan punted three times for an average of 34 yards with a long of 51, and he kicked off six times for an average of 38.7 yards
  • Senior defensive lineman Jeremy McGuigan and sophomore defensive back Aidan Lane both had six tackles to lead the Moravian defense while junior defensive lineman Nathan Carr added five stops
  • Basile had four tackles to go with his forced fumble while junior defensive lineman EJ Harvey and freshman defensive lineman Hunter Johnson both had four stops
  • Cacace made three tackles to go with his interception while senior defensive back Isaiah Johnson had three stops, a fumble recovery and a pass break-up and senior linebacker Chad Newhard added three tackles
