La PLUME, Pa. --- The Moravian University football squad raced past host Keystone College to earn a 55-14 victory over the Giants in the 2024 Landmark Conference opener Saturday.
How It Happened
- The Hounds received the opening kickoff with freshman wide receiver Josh Ludlow returning the kick 40 yards into Giants' territory. The Blue & Grey needed just four plays to find the end zone as senior quarterback Jared Jenkins finished the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Avery Koser. Freshman Ryan Child made the extra-point as Moravian took a 7-0 lead just 1:38 into action
- Keystone responded with a six-play, 71-yard drive capped by a six-yard touchdown run to knot the score at 7-7 with 10:13 to play in the first quarter
- The Greyhounds took the lead for good in the next possession with a 10-play, 64-yard drive. Graduate student running back Joey Richmond found the end zone with a one-yard touchdown run for the score, and senior quarterback Carter Hallgren tossed a two-point conversion pass to graduate student wide receiver Jordan Bingham to give Moravian a 15-7 lead with 5:30 left in the first period
- The Hounds' defense would get the ball back four plays into the next Keystone possession as sophomore defensive back Antonio Bowen intercepted a pass at the Moravian 30-yard line
- The Blue & Grey turned the miscue into points as freshman running back Jed Bendekovits ran three straight times before finding the end zone with a one-yard run to finish off the 10-play, 70-yard drive. Child made the PAT for a 22-7 advantage with 12:59 to play in the first half
- The Giants were forced to punt on their next possession
- The Greyhounds took over at their own seven-yard line and marched 93 yards to the end zone in ten plays as Jenkins found Ludlow with a 30-yard scoring strike to finish the drive. Child added another extra point for a 29-7 lead with 5:34 until the intermission
- Keystone answered with a nine-play, 71-yard drive that finished with a 17-yard touchdown run to cut the Moravian advantage to 29-14 at halftime
- The Giants began the second half with the ball and moved into the red zone before turning the ball over on downs after an incomplete pass
- Moravian needed just three plays to find the end zone as Jenkins hooked up with senior wide receiver Diego Del Castillo on a 66-yard scoring pass. Child added another extra point as the Hounds pushed the advantage to 36-14 with 7:21 to go in the third quarter
- Keystone drove to the goal line on their next possession; however, the Moravian defense made stops on third and fourth downs to take possession at the two-yard line
- Three plays into the fourth quarter Jenkins found Del Castillo again, this time on a 64-yard touchdown pass for the Hounds' sixth touchdown of the game. Moravian missed a two-point conversion to hold a 42-14 lead with 13:36 remaining after the eight-play, 98-yard drive
- The next three possessions ended with punts including two by the Giants and one from Moravian
- The Blue & Grey would extend the advantage to 49-14 with 6:48 to go when junior running back Camron Tinajero scored on a six-yard run to finish off a five-play, 62-yard drive as Child added the extra-point
- Moravian forced the Giants to turn the ball over on downs
- Hallgren capped a short five-play, 45-yard drive with a seven-yard scoring run to set the final score at 55-14 with 1:32 remaining
- The Hounds ended the game with an interception from freshman defensive back Ty Sander before kneeling to run out the clock
Inside the Numbers
- The 55 points for the Greyhounds are more than the team combined to score in the first four games of the season
- Moravian had 545 yards of total offense including 169 on the ground and 376 in the air
- Jenkins threw for a career-high 375 yards and four touchdowns to become the fourth player to reach 40 career touchdowns while completing 17-of-26 passes, and he also ran for 39 yards on eight carries. Hallgren completed one pass for a yard, and he had one rushing attempt for seven yards and a touchdown
- Del Castillo caught four passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns while Koser had four receptions for 31 yards and a score. Bingham pulled in three catches for 60 yards while Ludlow added two receptions for 52 yards and a touchdown to go with a kickoff return for 40 yards
- Sophomore wide receiver Nick Coffaro had two receptions for 32 yards while senior wide receiver Will Castel caught one pass for 43 yards and freshman wide receiver Gavyn Gennarelli added one catch for a yard
- Richmond ran for 36 yards and a touchdown on ten carries while junior wide receiver Ryan Frinzi had 29 yards on four attempts. Tinajero recorded 16 yards on three carries to go with a reception for five yards while Bendekovits had three attempts for 13 yards and a touchdown
- Freshman quarterback Declan McCarthy rushed for 12 yards on one carry while sophomore running back Cole Maholtz had ten yards on three attempts and freshman wide receiver Jacob Sutton added nine yards on two carries
- Child was 5-for-6 on extra points while freshman Jack Corrigan punted twice for an average of 32.0 and kickoff nine times for an average of 53.6 yards with one touchback
- Junior linebacker Clay Basile led the Moravian defense with eight tackles including one and a half for loss while freshman linebacker Malachi McNeil-Harrison had seven tackles with two and a half for loss
- Bowen recorded six stops with one for loss to go with his interception while senior linebacker Chris Cacace, junior linebacker Ethan O'Neill and junior defensive lineman EJ Harvey all posted five tackles
- Sophomore defensive back Cleveland Harding registered four tackles while junior defensive back Shea Endean, graduate student linebacker Declan Coors, graduate student defensive lineman Ian Brunner, senior linebacker Jeremiah Espinosa and senior defensive lineman Jeremy McGuigan all made three stops with McGuigan adding a half a tackle for loss, Endean recording a pass break-up and Coors returning a kickoff six yards
- Senior defensive back Isaiah Johnson had two tackles with one tackle for loss and a pass break-up while junior defensive lineman Nathan Carr had two stops with a half a tackle for loss
