MORRISVILLE, N.Y. --- The Moravian University football team jumped out to a 14-0 first half lead and held on for a 14-6 victory at SUNY Morrisville Saturday in the Hounds' final non-conference game of the 2024 campaign.
How It Happened
- The Greyhounds took the opening kickoff down the field with junior running back Isiah Rico finishing off the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Freshman Jack Corrigan had his extra-point partially blocked, but the ball still went through the uprights for a 7-0 lead just 2:24 into action
- The Mustangs attempted a 38-yard field goal on their possession; however, the kick sailed wide right to keep Moravian up 7-0 midway through the first quarter
- The Blue & Grey picked up one first down on their second drive before Corrigan came on to punt
- SUNY Morrisville punted after three plays to set the Moravian offense up near midfield
- The Hounds extended their advantage to 14-0 on the second play of the second quarter as senior quarterback Jared Jenkins found sophomore wide receiver Avery Koser in the back of the end zone on a fourth down play for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Corrigan's PAT made it 14-0 just eight seconds into the second period
- After a short drive and punt from the Mustangs, the Blue & Grey drove into SUNY Morrisville territory before turning the ball over on downs
- SUNY Morrisville punted once again
- Moravian drove into the red zone and freshman quarterback Declan McCarthy was stopped on a fourth-and-goal play from the one-yard line on the final play of the half to head to the locker room with a 14-0 lead
- The Mustangs punted on the first possession of the second half while the Hounds picked up a first down before turning the ball over on a fumble
- SUNY Morrisville turned the ball over on downs while Moravian fumbled again on its first play of the next drive
- The Mustangs moved into the red zone and faced fourth-and-goal at the one-yard line when the Greyhounds' defense stepped up for the stop
- For the third straight possession, Moravian fumbled the ball. The Mustangs recovered the ball for a touchdown. Greyhounds' senior defensive back Isaiah Johnson blocked the extra point to keep the lead at 14-6 with 3:08 to play in the third quarter
- Moravian moved down the field looking to answer. The Blue & Grey got into the red zone before Corrigan had a 27-yard field goal blocked early in the fourth quarter
- After both teams punted, the Mustangs went for a fourth down attempt near midfield when freshman linebacker Malachi McNeil-Harrison came up with a sack to give the Greyhounds possession and a short field
- The Blue & Grey moved into the red zone before turning the ball over on downs with less than two minutes remaining
- The Mustangs threw four straight incompletions to give Moravian the ball inside the red zone to run out the clock
Inside the Numbers
- The Greyhounds had 363 yards of total offense in the game including 269 through the air, and Moravian also held the ball for 34:45 of the contest
- Jenkins completed 26-of-41 passes for 269 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran for nine yards on six attempts
- Graduate student wide receiver Jordan Bingham had a team-high six catches for 23 yards as he became the 12th player in school history to reach 100 career receptions, hitting the milestone in just 13 games
- Koser caught five passes for 83 yards and his touchdown while senior wide receiver Diego Del Castillo has four receptions for 55 yards. Senior wide receiver Bryan Monge had three catches for 45 yards while freshman wide receiver Josh Ludlow had two receptions for eight yards to go with two punt returns for 14 yards and a kickoff return for 20 yards
- Senior wide receiver Will Castel had one catch for 22 yards while freshman wide receiver Jacob Sutton had one reception for 10 yards
- Graduate student Joey Richmond led the Moravian rushing attack with 33 yards on nine carries to go with one reception for six yards while Rico had 24 yards and a touchdown on six attempts. Sophomore running back Cole Maholtz also added 24 yards on six attempts while junior wide receiver Ryan Frinzi had one carry for 11 yards and one catch for seven yards. Junior running back Camron Tinajero recorded two yards on one carry and one reception for nine yards
- Corrigan punted three times for an average of 44.3 yards and a long of 48 yards, and he kicked off three times for an average of 61.7 yards
- Freshman defensive back Antonio Rivera returned one kickoff for 23 yards
- Senior linebacker Chris Cacace led the Hounds' defense with nine tackles including one and a half for loss and a half a sack while McNeil-Harrison added six stops with one and a half tackles for loss and a sack
- Junior defensive lineman Nathan Carr registered five tackles with three for loss and a half a sack while senior defensive lineman Jeremy McGuigan, junior linebacker Ethan O'Neil and sophomore defensive back Aidan Lane all had four tackle with McGuigan adding a half a tackle for loss
- Junior linebacker Clay Basile, sophomore defensive back Antonio Bowen and freshman defensive lineman Ryan Burns all had three tackles
