BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University has named Mike Frew '02 as Interim Head Men's Basketball Coach for the 2021-22 season effective immediately.
"I am pleased to announce Mike Frew as the Interim Head Coach of our Men's Basketball team," stated Director of Athletics & Head Women's Basketball Coach Mary Beth Spirk. "I knew Mike as a student-athlete and have seen him over the past 19 years grow into a leader and excellent mentor and coach of young people. He is the perfect fit for our team at this time. Mike is a proven recruiter, a tremendous motivator, and an established coach. I am quite confident that Mike will be successful on and off the court this season. I look forward to working with Mike on a daily basis."
Frew is no stranger to the Moravian program having served as an assistant coach during the pandemic shortened 2020-21 season as well as an Assistant Varsity Coach and Head Junior Varsity Coach from 2002-07. Frew played for the Greyhounds for four seasons, and he was a team captain as a senior. He saw action in 64 career games with 241 points, 168 rebounds, 49 assists, 30 steals and 12 blocked shots for the Hounds.
"I feel very fortunate to be provided the opportunity to serve as the first head men's basketball coach in Moravian history as a University," commented Frew. "Moravian has always held a special place in my heart. The experience provided to student-athletes here is second to none."
Frew has also coached on the high school level around the Lehigh Valley, serving as Head Boys Varsity Coach at Pen Argyl High School from 2007-11, Head Boys Varsity Coach at Bethlehem Catholic High School from 2011-15, Head Boys Freshman Coach at Liberty High School in 2016-17 and Head Boys Junior Varsity Coach at Liberty from 2018-20.
"I want to thank Coach Spirk and all the administrators who have entrusted me with leading our Men's Basketball program this winter," Frew said.
Frew graduated from Moravian in 2002 with Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Sociology, and he earned his Elementary Education Certification in 2004 at Moravian. Frew has Masters Degrees in Educational Leadership from Lehigh University in 2007 and Delaware Valley University in 2019. He has been a teacher in the Lehigh Valley since 2005, spending two years at the Centennial School of Lehigh University, five years in the Pen Argyl School District and the last 10 years in the Parkland School District.
Frew currently lives in South Whitehall Township with his wife Jessica and daughters Leah and Riley.
"I look forward to guiding our young roster this winter and providing the supports needed for them to compete daily and enjoy their experience. I feel blessed to have this opportunity, and I'm excited to get to work," Frew finished.
Frew takes over the Moravian program from Shawn Postiglione, who left to pursue another opportunity outside of coaching. Moravian will conduct a national search at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season for a permanent Head Coach.
