Moravian Drops Conference Road Game at Catholic

Sophomore Alex Dietz attempts a three-pointer against the Catholic University of America inside Johnston Hall.

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad possessed a 10-point first-half lead that the Catholic University of America overcame to hand the Greyhounds an 83-60 loss on the road in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds opened the scoring with three-consecutive three-pointers with two coming from sophomore guard Alex Dietz and the other by junior guard Nate Dougherty to put Moravian up 9-0 before the Cardinals scored their first points of the game. The Blue and Grey extended their lead to 10 points after sophomore forward Thomas Abato sank a pair of free throws to give the Hounds a 17-7 advantage with 13:08 remaining in the half.
  • Catholic went on a 17-1 run to take the lead for good, taking a 22-18 lead with over six minutes left on the clock. Sophomore forward Mike DiPietro drained a three-pointer to bring Moravian within one point, 22-21, but the Cardinals put together another run to increase their edge to 30-21. The Greyhounds outscored Catholic 8-4 in the final three minutes of the first half and went into the locker room trailing 34-31
  • Dietz scored the first five points of the second half of a couple of free throws and a three-pointer, followed by baskets coming from Dougherty and DiPietro that brought the Greyhounds back within four points, 44-40 with 16:23 remaining. Another Dietz three-pointer cut the edge to just two points, which would be as close as the Hounds would get in the half before Catholic began to pull away
