Moravian Earns Landmark Conference Victory on the Road at Goucher

BALTIMORE, Md. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad earned their third Landmark Conference victory of the season by defeating Goucher College 64-60 on the road Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a three-pointer by sophomore forward Mike DiPietro (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./LaSalle College HS) before the Gophers scored six-straight points to take a 6-3 lead with 16:36 to play in the first half. The Blue and Grey went back ahead, 9-8, with a basket by sophomore forward Thomas Abato (Flanders, N.J. / Mount Olive HS) but Goucher would score the next seven points to put the Hounds down 15-9 with 10:41 remaining in the half.
  • Sophomore guard C.J. Weber (Midlothian, Va./James River HS) drained a three-pointer and hit a free throw, followed by a made jumper by senior guard Danny Cooper (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth Whitemarsh HS) to tie the game at 15-15.  After multiple lead changes and ties, Cooper put Moravian ahead with just six seconds left, giving the Hounds a 27-25 advantage heading into halftime
  • Sophomore guard Alex Dietz (Warrington, Pa. / Central Bucks South HS) made a layup to start the second half followed by a bucket by Goucher. Junior guard Nate Dougherty (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton HS) converted to put the Greyhounds up by four. A series of lead changes continued but DiPietro regained the lead with a layup at the 15:29 mark for a score of 37-36.
  • After a basket by freshman forward Nate Santiago (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford HS) and a free throw and a layup from freshman guard/forward Antonio Montgomery (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS), the Greyhounds held a 47-41 edge over the Gophers with 9:00 minutes reaming in the game. Goucher took the lead back with 6:09 to go but after a couple of free throws made by Dougherty and layups by Santiago and DiPietro, Moravian was back up by five points under the five-minute mark.
  • Goucher would continue to keep the contest close, getting within two points on multiple occasions, but the Greyhounds would hold on to their lead to claim a four-point conference victory, 64-60

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had two players in double figures, led by Santiago who tied his career-high with 16 points and added seven rebounds and two assists. Cooper tossed in 12 points with a team-high five assists, four rebounds and one steal
  • Dietz contributed eight points to go with four boards and three assists while DiPietro and Weber each netted seven points.  DiPietro contributed eight boards and Weber finished the game with two rebounds, two rebounds and an assist
  • Dougherty finished with six points, three assists, a rebound and a steal as Abato and Montgomery both added four points apiece. Abato contributed two assists and a rebound while Montgomery brought down four boards and blocked two shots.
  • Freshman guard/forward Michael Leonardo (Matamoras, Pa./Delaware Valley HS) grabbed four rebounds
  • Moravian shot 25-for-56 from the floor (44.6 percent) while the Gophers were 22-for-53 from the floor (41.5 percent). The Hounds were 11 for-14 at the foul line (78.6 percent) while sinking four three-pointers and outrebounded Goucher 37-34
  • Greyhounds improve to 3-5 in Landmark Conference action and 8-10 overall
