BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University has selected Darryl Keckler as its new Head Men's Basketball Coach effective May 31.
"It is with great pleasure that I welcome Coach Keckler to Moravian University and the Athletic Department as our new men's basketball coach," stated Director of Athletics & Recreation and Head Women's Basketball Coach Mary Beth Spirk. "He is a proven winner and leader on and off the court. It was clear through the interview process that Darryl was the best person to lead our men's basketball program to the top of the Landmark Conference and back into the NCAA tournament. Our men's program is in great hands with Darryl as our coach. It is an exciting time for our current players, alumni, fans and the University."
Keckler comes to Moravian after serving as the Head Coach at Landmark Conference foe Drew University for the last 14 years where he has posted 167 victories, won the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship and was a two-time Landmark Conference Coach of the Year. Keckler led the Rangers to the Landmark Conference Tournament seven times and had a dozen student-athletes earn Landmark All-Conference honors in addition to a Landmark Conference Player of the Year, a Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and a two-time Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
"I am honored to be the next Head Coach for the Men's Basketball Program at Moravian University," commented Keckler. "Our goal is to develop a successful program on the court, in the classroom, and in the community."
In addition to his time coaching at Drew, Keckler has spent the last five years working as an assistant athletic director for the Rangers as well as teaching a business of sports class as an adjunct professor for the last four years. Prior to his time at Drew, Keckler spent five years as an assistant coach for both men's basketball and men's golf at Gettysburg College, and he also assisted with the Bullets' strength and conditioning program.
"I'd like to thank President Bryon L. Grigsby, Executive Vice-President Nicole Loyd, Director of Athletics Mary Beth Spirk and the rest of the search committee for giving me and my family this opportunity," Keckler said.
Keckler graduated from Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University in 2003 with a degree in sports management, and he scored over 1,250 points in his career and was a two-time All-TranSouth Athletic Conference selection. He earned a master's degree in exercise science and physical education from McDaniel College. Keckler resides in Easton with his wife Alexa, who is the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at Lehigh University, and their four children.
Keckler takes over the Moravian program that was led by interim Head Coach and former Greyhound student-athlete Mike Frew this past winter.
"We thank Mike for stepping in just before the season last October and leading our group of outstanding young men through the year. We appreciate everything he has done for Moravian as a student-athlete, alumni, and coach on multiple occasions since his graduation. Mike really kept our team together through a difficult year and has put the program in a good position for Darryl to take over," finished Spirk.
Keckler becomes the 14th Head Coach to lead the Greyhounds' program since 1935, and Moravian is just 33 wins shy of 1,000 as a program since then as the team heads into its 86th season in 2022-23.
