Greyhounds Top Penn State Brandywine for Second Time in 2021-22

MEDIA, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad earned an 81-68 win at Penn State Brandywine in non-conference action Wednesday evening, the Greyhounds second victory over the Nittany Lions this winter.

How It Happened

  • Penn State Brandywine scored first before sophomore forward Mike DiPietro drained a jumper to knot the score at 2-2. DiPietro also gave the Hounds their first lead at 10-8 as the first 11 and a half minutes saw five lead changes before the Blue and Grey took a 23-22 lead on the three-pointer from sophomore guard C.J. Weber at the 8:29 mark
  • The Greyhounds extended the advantage to 28-22 with a three-pointer from freshman guard/forward Michael Leonardo and a fast-break lay-up by junior guard Nate Dougherty. Moravian's edge reached eight points at 32-24 on a lay-up from senior guard Danny Cooper, and the Greyhounds headed to the locker room with a 36-31 lead
  • The Nittany Lions scored the first six points of the second half to move back in front 37-36. From that point, the game saw four ties and four more lead changes before the Hounds took the lead for good at 55-53 on a three-pointer from Leonardo at the 10:58 mark. That started an 11-0 run that saw the Blue and Grey up 63-53 with 7:55 to play after another three-pointer from Leonardo
  • Penn State Brandywine would get within three points at 63-60 before Moravian pulled away on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Weber. The Hounds' edge reached 17 points in the final minute of the victory 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double figures led by Weber, who tossed in a career-high 16 points to go with four rebounds and three assists. Cooper contributed 14 points, six rebounds and three assists while sophomore guard Alex Dietz recorded 11 points with two rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists
  • Leonardo netted a career-high nine points with two assists while Dougherty also finished with nine points to go with three boards. DiPietro scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds while sophomore guard/forward James Thompson and freshman forward Nate Santiago both contributed five points with Santiago adding seven rebounds and Thompson having two rebounds and two assists
  • Freshman guard/forward Timothy Boutilier and freshman forward Antonio Montgomery each scored the first two points of their careers while sophomore forward Thomas Abato added five rebounds
  • Moravian finished the contest with a 40-31 advantage on the glass, and the Greyhounds shot 52.8 percent from the field (28-of-53) and 58.8 percent beyond the three-point line (10-of-17), both season high percentages
