Hounds Hold on for Landmark Conference Victory over Goucher

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball team led by as many as 19 points in the second half before holding on for a 77-75 victory over visiting Goucher College in Landmark Conference action in Johnston Hall Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • Sophomore forward Mike DiPietro hit a three-pointer to open the scoring but it would be the Gophers with a 7-5 lead just over two minutes into action. Senior guard Danny Cooper gave the Hounds a 10-7 lead, and Moravian led 14-10 before Goucher knotted the contest at 14-14
  • Sophomore guard C.J. Weber put the Blue and Grey back in front on a three-pointer for a 17-14 edge. Holding a 22-20 lead, Moravian went on a 9-0 run with junior guard Nate Dougherty making the advantage 31-20 with just over five minutes until the intermission. Dougherty would hit another lay-up in the final minute of the half to send the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 36-26 edge
  • Goucher scored the first two points of the second half before a 10-0 by the Hounds pushed the Moravian advantage to 46-28 on a lay-up from DiPietro with 16:31 remaining. The Gophers cut the deficit back to nine points at 51-42; however, another 9-0 run by the Hounds had the edge back to 18 points with just under 10 minutes remaining
  • Moravian's largest lead would come at the 9:21 mark when Cooper drained a three-pointer for a 63-44 advantage. From that point, the Gophers outscored the Greyhounds 31-12 and closed within a point in the final 42 seconds before a free throw from sophomore guard Alex Dietz with 1.8 seconds left set the final score

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds had five players in double figures led by DiPietro, who tossed in 18 points to go with six rebounds. Cooper and Dietz each netted 16 points with Cooper adding five rebounds and five assists and Dietz contributing three rebounds. Dougherty finished with 11 points and four assists while Weber had 10 points and three assists
  • Freshman forward Nate Santiago had a career high 11 rebounds to go with three points while sophomore forward Thomas Abato added five rebounds and three points. Freshman forward Michael Leonardo contributed five rebounds and a pair of assists
  • Moravian had a 41-29 advantage on the boards
  • The Greyhounds also shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the floor and 7-of-14 beyond the three-point line
