NEWARK, Del. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad took on Division I the University of Delaware in an exhibition game in the Bob Carpenter Center on Friday evening., falling by a score of 94-55
How It Happened
- After the Greyhounds forced a Blue Hens turnover to kick the game off, Moravian opened the scoring with sophomore forward Mike DiPietro making a layup assisted from junior guard Nate Dougherty
- Delaware scored back-to-back baskets to take a 5-2 lead before sophomore guard Alex Dietz drained a three-pointer to tie the contest at 5-5, Freshman forward Nate Santiago countered a Blue Hens three-pointer with one of his own to even the game at 8-8 before Delaware scored the next nine points to take a 17-8 lead
- Senior guard Danny Cooper hit a pull-up jumper to cut the deficit to seven, 17-10, with 14:01 to play in the first half
- Delaware extended their lead to 17 points before sophomore guard C.J. Weber connected on a three-pointer to put the game at 27-13 with 10:03 remaining the half. The Hounds would come within 13 points, but the Blue Hens took a 51-24 lead into the locker room
- The Greyhounds had a better field goal percentage in the second half, but Delaware would keep a steady lead throughout the second half, handing Moravian a 94-55 loss in their exhibition contest
Inside the Numbers
- Tonight's exhibition game was the first time since 1933 that the Greyhounds took on Delaware with the Blue Hens leading the series 6-2
- Moravian had just one player in double figures led by Cooper, who finished the night with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal
- Santiago was close behind, tossing in nine points and grabbing four boards while Dougherty contributed eight points, four rebounds three assists with two made three-pointers and a blocked shot
- Freshman Thomas Abato netted seven points and brought down six rebounds and went 3-for-4 at the foul line as Weber added four points, two rebounds and a steal
- Both DiPietro and sophomore forward James Thompson contributed four points. DiPietro added three boards while Thompson recorded an assist, a steal and one rebound
- Dietz and freshman guard/forward Michael Leonardo capped off their night with three points apiece, with Dietz leading the Greyhounds with six assists and two rebounds as Leonardo grabbed one board
- Freshman forward Antonio Montgomery added a bucket for his two points to go along with a rebound and a blocked shot
- Moravian shot 23-for-67 from the floor (34.4 percent), and the Hounds were 3-for-4 at the foul line (75.0 percent) while making six three-pointers
- Moravian's last matchup against a Division I opponent was back in 2016 when the Greyhounds went up against Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.
