No. 6 Moravian Drops Final Two Games at 2024 NFCA DIII Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. --- The No. 6 Moravian University softball squad dropped its final two games at the 2024 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Leadoff Classic at South Commons in Columbus, Georgia as the Greyhounds fell to No. 11 Bethel (Minn.) University, 4-3, and Chapman (Calif.) University, 12-1 in five innings Sunday. 

How It Happened – Bethel (Minn.)

  • The contest was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when the Hounds scored three times. Sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman hit a one-out double before sophomore Hailey Tanner came on to pinch run. Junior center fielder Sage Snyder followed with a two-run home run. After the homer, sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano drew a walk with freshman Shayla Morgan coming in to pinch run. After Morgan stole second, she would race home on an error on a ball hit by junior left fielder Jessica Forder
  • Bethel countered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to finish off the scoring
  • Senior Madi Cunningham tossed a complete game in the circle, allowing four runs on six hits to go with a pair of strikeouts

How It Happened – Chapman (Calif.)

  • Chapman opened the final game of the weekend with four runs in the top of the first frame, and the Panthers added two runs in the second and four more in the third to build a 10-0 lead
  • Moravian pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the third inning when senior shortstop Ajala Elmore led off with a double and eventually scored on a passed ball
  • Chapman finished the scoring with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings
  • Sophomore Sydney Andrews started in the circle for the Blue & Grey and allowed four runs on four hits in a third of an inning. Sophomore Natalie Otto tossed 2.1 innings with six runs on five hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts while freshman Kyra Holtje made her first collegiate appearance with two runs on five hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had eight hits on the day with Snyder going 2-for-5 with a run, two RBIs and a homer, the fourth of her career
  • Elmore had a hit, a double and a run while Silberman, junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys, senior designated player Emily Silberman, sophomore outfielder Madison Berning and junior infielder Ren Herschman all had one hit
  • Tanner and Morgan both scored runs for the Hounds
