Greyhounds Sweep Manhattanville to Close Out 2024 Regular Season

PURCHASE, N.Y. --- The Moravian University softball squad swept a non-conference doubleheader at Manhattanville College, 10-2 and 3-2, to close out the 2024 regular season Tuesday afternoon. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Valiants took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a triple and a groundout
  • The Hounds scored twice in the top of the second to move ahead 2-1. Senior designated player Emily Silberman tied the contest with a one-out solo home run to center field, her fourth homer of the season and 20th of her career. Senior second baseman Ajala Elmore followed with a solo homer to center as well for her fourth home run of 2024 and ninth of her career
  • The Blue & Grey added three runs in the top of the third frame to build a 5-1 advantage. Junior shortstop Holly Walter was hit by a pitch to begin the inning before junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys connected on a two-run homer to right center, her fourth home run of the spring and 11th of her career. Later in the inning, junior left fielder Sage Snyder drew a walk and stole second base with a pair of throwing errors allowing Snyder to race around the bases and score
  • Moravian added four more runs in the top of the sixth for a 9-1 edge. Senior pinch hitter Mya Zettlemoyer reached on a fielder's choice with freshman Madelin Cooper coming on to pinch run. Walter hit an infield single while Gawrys reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman followed with a grand slam to left center to clear the bases. The round tripper extended Silberman's school and Landmark Conference single season record to 14, and it was her 20th career homer
  • Manhattanville pushed a run home in the bottom of the sixth to make it 9-2
  • The Hounds finished off the scoring in the top of the seventh inning with a run. Sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews connected on a one-out triple, and she scored on a throwing error after an infield single from sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano
  • Senior Madi Cunningham started in the circle and became the tenth player in program history to reach 50 career victories as she improved to 15-2 on the season. Cunningham allowed two runs, one earned on seven hits to go with four strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Valiants took another 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second contest on a sacrifice fly
  • Manhattanville doubled the advantage to 2-0 with a solo homer in the second inning
  • The Greyhounds cut the deficit in half to 2-1 with a run in the top of the third inning. Morgan singled with one out, and she crossed the plate when Marcie Silberman hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Walter was thrown out at home on the plate trying to tie the score
  • Moravian scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 3-2 lead. DeStefano reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a wild pitch. Morgan hit an infield single to put DeStefano on third, and Walter followed with an RBI single to center field to score DeStefano and tie the game. Morgan raced across the plate with the go ahead run when Marcie Silberman reached on a dropped fly ball that would have ended the inning
  • Sophomore Natalie Otto improved to 10-3 on the season as she allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and a pair of strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits in the two games with Walter collecting three hits, scoring twice and adding an RBI
  • Morgan was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored while Gawrys had two hits two runs, two RBIs and a homer
  • Marcie Silberman collected two hits, a run, a homer and four RBIs while Elmore added two hits, a run and a homer
  • DeStefano recorded two hits and a run while Emily Silberman contributed a home run and an RBI
  • Andrews had a hit and a run while junior Ren Herschman added a pinch hit single in the second game
  • Snyder and Cooper each crossed the plate once
