No. 16 Moravian Sweeps No. 20 Lebanon Valley As Walter & Gawrys Each Record 100th Career Hit

ANNVILLE, Pa. --- The No. 16 Moravian University softball team swept host No. 20 Lebanon Valley College, 4-2 and 6-2, including a seventh inning rally in the opening contest of the non-conference doubleheader Tuesday.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds broke the scoreless opener in the top of the fifth inning with a run for a 1-0 edge. Senior pitcher Madi Cunningham led off the frame with a double, and she raced home on an RBI double from sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews
  • The Flying Dutchmen countered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to move ahead 2-1
  • Moravian scored three times in the top of the seventh for a 4-2 lead and the eventual victory. Freshman center fielder Shayla Morgan and Cunningham drew walks to lead off the inning with Morgan racing home on an error on a ball hit by junior left fielder Jessica Forder to tie the contest at 2-2. Freshman pinch runner Leah Chladny put the Blue & Grey back on top as she scampered across the plate on an RBI double by junior shortstop Holly Walter, and Walter scored the final run as she came home on an error on a ball hit by junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys 
  • Cunningham improved to 4-1 in the circle as she allowed two runs on eight hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the nightcap. Walter led off the game with a single as she became the 53rd player in program history to reach 100 career hits, and she scored on an RBI single from sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman. Senior designated player Emily Silberman connected on an RBI single to chase Gawrys, who had reached on an error, home, and Marcie Silberman scored when Andrews connected on an RBI single
  • Lebanon Valley answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning, and the Flying Dutchmen scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 4-2
  • Gawrys joined Walter in the 100-hit club with a single in the top of the second inning as the 54th player to the milestone
  • The Hounds countered back with two runs in the top half of the fifth frame to extend the edge back to four runs at 6-2. Junior center fielder Sage Snyder led off with a single, and Emily Silberman followed with a single before freshman Kyra Holtje came in to pinch run. After a sacrifice bunt by Andrews, sophomore pitcher Sarah DeStefano ripped a two-RBI single up the middle to bring in Snyder and Holtje with the final runs of the game
  • DeStefano tossed the complete game in the circle with two runs on 11 hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts as she improve to 2-0 on the year 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 14 hits in the two contests with Andrews going 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a double
  • Walter had two hits to reach 100 for her career, and she scored three runs and had an RBI and a double while Gawrys had one hit to get to the 100-hit milestone, and she added a run
  • Forder knocked out two hits while Emily Silberman had two hits and an RBI
  • DeStefano was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs while Cunningham went 1-for-2 with a run and a double
  • Marcie Silberman and Snyder each had one hit, a run and an RBI
  • Morgan, Chladny and Holtje all scored once in the sweep
  • The Blue & Grey improve to 3-1 against nationally-ranked teams this spring
