Greyhounds Split with Muhlenberg in Non-Conference Doubleheader

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad split a non-conference doubleheader with rival Muhlenberg College Thursday at Blue & Grey Field, winning the first game 14-0 in five innings and falling in the second contest 14-9.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Hounds scored the opening run of the afternoon in the second inning in the first contest. Senior second baseman Ajala Elmore connected on a two-out single and raced home on an error by the Mules
  • The Blue & Grey sent 17 batters to the plate in the third inning as Moravian scored 12 times. Senior pitcher Madi Cunningham started the frame with a single and stole second base. Junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys singled to put runners on the corners before sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman ripped a two-RBI double to left center. Junior left fielder Sage Snyder hit a single and then stole second base with Silberman crossing the plate on a throwing error. Freshman center fielder Shayla Morgan came in to pinch run after senior designated player Emily Silberman walked, and Morgan stole second with Snyder scoring on a throwing error. Elmore drove in Morgan with an RBI single while sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews and sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano both singled to load the bases. Elmore and Andrews both raced home on an error while Gawrys connected on an RBI single. Marcie Silberman hit another two-RBI double to almost the exact same spot. Elmore drove in the final two runs of the inning with a two-RBI single
  • The Hounds added one run in the bottom of the fourth to finish the scoring. Senior left fielder Mya Zettlemoyer connected on a one-out double and scored on an RBI ground out from sophomore pinch hitter Emma Wariwanchik
  • Cunningham tossed a one-hit shutout as she struck out three batters to improve to 10-2 on the season

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Mules jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second game
  • The Hounds countered with six runs in the bottom of the first to move ahead 6-4. Senior shortstop Holly Walter reached on an error before Gawrys singled. Marcie Silberman hit an RBI single down the left field line to bring in Walter while Snyder connected on an RBI single to chase Gawrys across the plate. Silberman scored on another Muhlenberg error while DeStefano put Moravian ahead with a two-RBI single. Walter came up to bat again and hit an infield RBI single for the final run of the inning
  • The Blue & Grey pushed the advantage to 7-4 with a run in the bottom of the second as Andrews hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score freshman pinch runner Cassandra Farrell
  • Muhlenberg answered with five runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth frame for a 13-7 lead
  • Moravian plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Mules' edge to 13-9. Marcie Silberman led off with a single and she scored on a throwing error on a bunt single from Elmore. Freshman pitcher Kyra Holtje crossed the plate on an RBI fielder's choice by Andrews
  • Muhlenberg finished the scoring with a run in the top of the seventh
  • Sophomore Natalie Otto started in the circle for the Hounds and allowed nine runs, five earned on six hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts in two-plus innings of action. Cunningham gave up four runs on five hits with one strikeout in two innings while Holtje tossed the final three innings with a run on three hits to go with four strikeouts 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 28 hits on the day with Elmore going 6-for-7 with three RBIS and two runs. Her fourth hit of the day made Elmore the 55th player in program history to reach 100 career hits
  • Marcie Silberman was 5-for-7 with five RBIs, four runs and a pair of doubles while Gawrys had a 4-for-8 day with three runs and an RBI
  • Snyder contributed three hits, three runs and an RBI while Walter had two hits, two runs and an RBI
  • Morgan also had two hits and a run while DeStefano registered two hits and two RBIs
  • Andrews had one hit, two runs and three RBIs while Zettlemoyer posted a hit, a double and two runs
  • Cunningham added a hit and a run while junior pinch hitter Jessica Forder had one hit
  • Wariwanchik recorded an RBI while Farrell, Holtje and freshman pinch runner Madelin Cooper each crossed the plate once
