Moravian Blasts Six Homers & Scores 26 Runs in Sweep at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball team connected for six home runs and scored 26 total runs in a Landmark Conference sweep at Juniata College Sunday, winning 20-0 in five innings and 6-1.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning in the first game. Senior designated player Emily Silberman singled before freshman center fielder Shayla Morgan came on to run. Senior second baseman Ajala Elmore and sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews both singled to load the bases before sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano hit an RBI sacrifice fly to send Morgan home. Elmore raced home on a throwing error
  • The Blue & Grey doubled the score to 4-0 with two more runs on the top of the third. Junior shortstop Holly Walter drew a leadoff walk before junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys connected on a two-run homer to center field, her second home run of the season and ninth of the season
  • Moravian pushed six runs across the plate in the top of the fourth frame to make the advantage 10-0. Senior pitcher Madi Cunningham singled with one out, and she raced around the bases on an RBI double by Walter. Gawrys reached on an error to put runners on the corners, and sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman followed with an RBI single as Walter scored. Freshman Madelin Cooper came on to pinch run, and junior left fielder Sage Snyder singled to load the bases again. Emily Silberman connected on a grand slam to center field for her second homer of the season and the 18th of her career
  • The Hounds tacked on ten runs in the top of the fifth inning while putting a total of 20 players into the game throughout the contest. DeStefano led off with a single, and senior Mya Zettlemoyer  came on to pinch run. Cunningham followed with a two-run homer to left center, her first homer of the spring and seventh of her career. Walter made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot to left center for her first of the season and sixth of her career. Marcie Silberman hit a two-out double while sophomore pinch hitter Emma Wariwanchik was hit by a pitch. Junior Ren Herschman loaded the bases with a single before Silberman raced home on a wild pitch. Sophomore Hailey Tanner  followed with a pinch-hit RBI single while freshman Emma Grace Pachkowski had an RBI single hit single. Junior Jenna Lenko contributed a two-RBI pinch hit single while freshman pinch hitter Leah Chladny had an RBI ground out. Sophomore Madison Berning finished the scoring with a pinch-hit RBI single
  • Cunningham improved to 9-2 in the circle as she combined on a five-hit shutout with freshman Kyra Holtje. Cunningham tossed the first four innings with four hits and strikeout while Holtje finished the game with a hit, a walk and a strikeout in one inning of action 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Hounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the nightcap. Snyder drew a leadoff walk, stole second base and raced home on an RBI single from Andrews
  • Moravian pushed the advantage to 4-0 with three runs in the top of the third frame. Walter reached on a fielders choice and moved to third on a single from Gawrys. Snyder connected on a two-RBI single after Gawrys stole second base, and Snyder raced home on an RBI single from Emily Silberman
  • Juniata got onto the scoreboard with a run on the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-1
  • The Blue & Grey finished the scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh inning as Gawrys and Marcie Silberman hit back-to-back solo home runs. For Gawrys, it was her third homer of the season and tenth of her career while Silberman connected on her team-leading tenth home run of the spring and 16th of her career
  • Sophomore Natalie Otto earned the win in the circle to improve to 6-1 as she allowed a run on six hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 32 hits on the day with Emily Silberman going 4-for-5 with five RBIs, a run and a homer
  • Gawrys was 4-for-7 with four runs, three RBIs and a pair of home runs while Marcie Silberman had a 4-for-9 day with two runs, two RBIs, a homer and a double
  • Snyder posted a 3-for-5 afternoon with three runs and a pair of RBIs while Andrews had three hits and an RBI
  • Walter contributed two hits, three runs, two RBIs, a double and a home run while Cunningham was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs and a homer
  • DeStefano also contributed a pair of hits with an RBI while Morgan hit two hits and scored once
  • Lenko had a hit, a run and two RBIs while Berning, Pachkowski and Tanner all had a hit and an RBI with Pachkowski and Tanner both scoring a run
  • Herschman and Elmore both added a hit and a run
  • Zettlemoyer crossed the plate twice while Cooper and Wariwanchik each scored once
  • The 20 runs the Greyhounds scored in the opener tied the school record for most runs in a game. The last time the Blue & Grey scored 20 runs was a 20-11 victory over Coe (Iowa) College at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic on March 8, 2014 in Tucson, Arizona
