No. 16 Hounds Sweep Ursinus on the Road

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. --- The No. 16 Moravian University softball squad swept host Ursinus College, 10-0 in five innings and 7-3, in non-conference action Saturday.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the opener. Senior designated player Emily Silberman connected on a one-out single with sophomore second baseman Hailey Tanner coming into run. Tanner stole second and moved to third on a single by sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano. Sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews followed with a two-RBI single to bring Tanner and DeStefano across the plate
  • Moravian tacked on four more runs in the top of the third frame for a 6-0 edge. Sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman doubled with one out before junior center fielder Sage Snyder connected on a two-run homer, her second home run of the season. Emily Silberman followed with a double as freshman Kyra Holtje came in to pinch run. Senior pitcher Madi Cunningham singled through the left side before DeStafano ripped a two-RBI single that scored Holtje and Cunningham
  • The Blue & Grey plated three more runs in the top of fourth inning on a single from junior shortstop Holly Walter, a walk by junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys and a three-run homer to center field by Marcie Silberman, her team-leading fifth home run of the spring
  • The Hounds finished off the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth frame as freshman center fielder Shayla Morgan drew a one-out walk and raced home on an RBI double by junior pinch hitter Ren Herschman
  • Cunningham went the distance in the circle to improve to 3-1 on the year as she allowed five hits and had one strikeout in the shutout 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Moravian struck first again in the second game with a run in the top of the first inning. Walter began the game with a triple, and she raced home on an RBI single from Gawrys
  • The Bears answered with a run in the bottom of the first frame
  • The Greyhounds retook the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth as Morgan, DeStefano and junior left fielder Jessica Forder all had infield singles to load the bases before Walter ripped a two-RBI single to left center to chase Morgan and DeStefano across the plate. After Gawrys singled to load the bases again, Marcie Silberman drew a walk to score Forder
  • Ursinus countered again with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 4-3
  • The Blue & Grey finished off the scoring with three more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Andrews drew a leadoff walk while Morgan had a bunt single. DeStafano connected on an RBI single as Andrews scampered home while Walter had an infield RBI single to score Morgan. Freshman pinch runner Leah Chladny raced home with the final run on an RBI sacrifice fly from Gawrys
  • DeStefano earned the win in the circle, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts in six innings of action. Cunningham tossed the final inning, striking out one of the three batters she faced

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 27 hits in the two games with DeStefano going 6-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs
  • Walter was 5-for-9 with two runs, three RBIs, a triple and three stolen bases while Morgan was 3-for-4 with three runs
  • Snyder recorded a 3-for-7 day with a run, two RBIs, a homer and a pair of stolen bases while Marcie Silberman had two hits, two runs, four RBIS and a home run
  • Gawrys also added a pair of hits with two RBIs and a run while Emily Silberman contributed two hits and a double
  • Cunningham and Forder each had one hit and one run while Hershman had a hit, an RBI and a double
  • Andrews contributed a hit, a run and two RBIs while Holtje and Chladny both crossed the plate once
