No. 16 Greyhounds Sweep Non-Conference Doubleheader at King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- The No. 16 Moravian University softball team swept its first non-conference doubleheader of the season, defeating host King's College, 8-0 in five innings and 9-5, Wednesday. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener. Junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys connected on a one-out double, and she race home on an RBI double from sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman. Junior center fielder Sage Snyder and senior designated player Emily Silberman hit singles while senior pitcher Madi Cunningham reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore right fielder Sarah DeStefano ripped an RBI single to bring in Snyder while sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews hit a two-RBI double that scored Cunningham and sophomore second baseman Hailey Tanner, who had come into run for Emily Silberman
  • Moravian pushed the advantage to 7-0 with three runs in the top of the second frame. Junior shortstop Holly Walter led off with a triple and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Marcie Silberman. Snyder ripped a double, and she scored along with Marcie Silberman on a two-RBI single from Emily Silberman
  • The Blue & Grey added the final run of the contest in the top of the third inning when junior left fielder Jessica Forder reached on a fielder's choice and raced home on an RBI double by Gawrys
  • Cunningham improved to 2-1 in the circle this season as she allowed just one hit while striking out three batters in the shutout

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Monarchs scored first in the second game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning
  • Moravian countered with two runs in the top of the second frame to knot the score at 2-2. Andrews drew a walk and eventually scored on an RBI bunt single from freshman center fielder Shayla Morgan while Walter had an RBI single to chase Forder across the plate
  • The Hounds pulled ahead 3-2 in the top of the third inning when Marcie Silberman led off the frame with a solo home run to left center field
  • King's answered in the bottom of the third to tie the game again at 3-3
  • The Blue & Grey retook a one-run advantage in the top of the fourth when Morgan reached on a fielder's choice and raced home on an RBI triple off Walter's bat
  • The Monarchs countered again with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to retake a 5-4 lead
  • The Greyhounds tied the contest again in the top of the fifth inning as Emily Silberman connected on a two-out solo homer to right center
  • Moravian plated four runs in the top of the sixth frame to take the lead for good and finish the scoring. Morgan led off with a single and scored on an RBI single from Walter while Marcie Silberman hit her second homer of the contest, a two-run shot to center field. Snyder followed with a triple and raced home on an RBI ground out of Emily Silberman's bat for the last run
  • DeStefano started in the circle and tossed three innings with four runs, three earned, on six hits and a walk to go with three strikeouts. Sophomore Natalie Otto pitched the final four innings with an unearned run on two hits and a walk to go with five strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 28 hits in the two games with Marcie Silberman going 4-for-7 with five RBIs, three runs, a double and two homers to give her four home runs this spring
  • Snyder was 4-for-8 with three runs, a double and a triple while Walter went 4-for-9 with three RBIs, two runs and a pair of triples
  • Emily Silberman posted a 3-for-6 day with four RBIs, a run and a homer, her first of the season and 17th of her career while Andrews was also 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run
  • Gawrys had three hits, two doubles, a run and an RBI while Morgan was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI
  • Cunningham, DeStefano and Forder all had one hit with Forder scoring twice, Cunningham crossing the plate once and DeStefano adding an RBI
  • Tanner and Otto were each 1-for-2 at the plate with Tanner scoring a run
