BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2023-24 athletic campaign. The next event in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 6 highlight – the softball squad posting a 2-1, eight-inning walk off victory versus Penn College in the opening round of the 2024 NCAA Division III Regional.
The contest took place on May 16, 2024 as the Greyhounds made their 20th appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and for the first time, the Hounds hosted a regional at Blue & Grey Field. Moravian had an early 1-0 lead in the game as the squad scored in the second inning with an RBI groundout from sophomore third baseman Sydney Andrews scoring freshman pinch runner Emma Grace Pachkowski. Penn College plated the tying run in the top of the fourth to make it 1-1, and neither team was able to score again in the regulation seven innings.
The Greyhounds only needed one out in the bottom of the eighth inning for the victory. Junior shortstop Holly Walter led off with a single and stole second base before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt from junior first baseman Lindsey Gawrys. After sophomore catcher Marcie Silberman was hit by a pitch, Walter raced home with the winning run on an RBI fielder's choice from junior left fielder Sage Snyder as Walter beat the throw to the plate from the first baseman.
The win for the Hounds marked the 15th time in 20 NCAA appearances that Moravian had won its first game of the tournament. The program also moved to 7-5 in extra-inning games in NCAA tournament action.
