BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing its look back at its 2022-23 athletic campaign. The second entry in our second countdown of the summer – the Top 10 Stories of the Year selected by the athletic administration – is our No. 9 highlight – Moravian hosting its inaugural All-Athlete Awards Banquet sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
The event was held in Johnston Hall on Monday, April 24 for all student-athletes. There was a blue carpet entry with photos and a buffet dinner before the awards presentation. Moravian handed out its annual Senior Awards during the evening as women's track & field standout Crystal Robinson was selected as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete while golfer/men's tennis player Andrew Hozza was honored with the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete. The Blue & Grey Scholar Athlete awards were presented to field hockey student-athlete Emily Wells, who has a 3.87 GPA and is majoring in biochemistry/pre-med track, and men's tennis player Justin Szaro, who maintains a 3.91 GPA and is majoring in computer science and physics.
The night also saw the presentation of the annual H.T.D. Gillespie Award for outstanding service to Moravian's athletics program to Assistant Men's and Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Coach Jon D'Ottavio. In addition to being the head throwing coach for the track & field programs and assisting the cross country squad, D'Ottavio serves as Moravian's scoreboard operator during basketball season and helps out with other game management duties throughout the year.
Moravian added new awards this year, and with the Greyhounds' spring teams still in competition, the awards window was the Spring 2022 season, the Fall 2022 campaign and the Winter 2022-23 season. Some of the awards presented were Male Newcomer of the Year to men's basketball player Marquis Ratcliff, Female Newcomer of the Year to women's basketball student-athlete Tessa Zamolyi, Moravian Athletics Best Character to men's soccer player Kyle Dixon, Moravian Athletics Spirit Award to softball student-athlete Ajala Elmore, Male Athlete of the Year to baseball player Derek Holmes and Female Athlete of the Year to women's track & field athlete Lexi Groff.
