BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Gary Zack '12, a national champion men's javelin thrower, is being inducted into the Moravian University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, September 22 in Johnston Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Gary Zack, who graduated in 2012, was a standout on the men's outdoor track & field teams for four years, winning the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championship in the javelin with a then school-record distance of 67.36 meters (221-0) on his first throw of the meet. Zack competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championship meet all four years, placing as the NCAA runner-up in 2012 at 67.14 meters (220-3), and he was ninth as a freshman in 2009 and finished 15th in 2010.
Zack was honored as the 2012 United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division III Mideast Region Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. He was the 2011 Landmark Conference Champion in the javelin to earn All-Conference First Team honors, and he made the All-Conference Second Team in 2010 as the runner-up. Zack still holds Moravian's and the Landmark Conference's javelin record at 69.05 meters (226-6), which he threw during the Coach P Open at Moravian on April 14, 2012.
In the classroom, Zack was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team in 2012 while making the Capital One Academic All-District Team the same year. Zack was a three-time member of the Landmark Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll and honored on the Landmark Conference Spring All-Academic Team in 2011.
Zack is being joined by women's basketball and women's track & field student-athlete Kelly Applegate '07; women's soccer goalie Caitlin Corrigan Boyer '09; baseball pitcher Brendan Close '12 and women's volleyball setter Kaitie Kramer-Bicknell '00 to make up the Moravian Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2023. The 1999 and 1998 women's volleyball teams and the 2007 and 2008 women's soccer squads will also be inducted on Friday, September 22 in Johnston Hall as part of Moravian's Homecoming Weekend while Patricia Billie Miller '77 will receive the Robert Martin Herbstman Award.
