SCRANTON, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's soccer team dropped its first match of the 2017 campaign as well as its Landmark Conference opener at the University of Scranton Saturday afternoon by a 1-0 tally.

The Greyhounds, now 6-1-1 on the year, would get two shots on goal in the first half of the match, the first coming from freshman midfielder Val Monaco in the 29th minute. The second opportunity came a minute later from junior forward Aimee Manley put a shot on the keeper that was saved.

The Royals would net what ended up as the only goal of the match in the 60th minute off of a penalty kick. The Scranton goal was the first first allowed by the Greyhounds in the first 612 minutes of the season. Sophomore defender Paige Weiss nearly tied the match in the 87th minute when her shot from 25 yards out knocked off the cross bar and was cleared out by the Royal defense.

Senior goalie Jessica Lawton made one save while playing the first 45 minutes of the match, and sophomore keeper Jamie Daly suffered her first loss of the season allowing the penalty kick goal in the second half. The Greyhounds finished the match with a 9-7 edge in shots while each team had four corner kicks.

Moravian is slated to return to action on Wednesday, September 27 when the squad travels to King's (Pa.) College in a non-conference match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
