Moravian Falls to DeSales in Non-Conference Action in First Setback of 2022

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's volleyball squad jumped out to a 2-0 lead but ended up falling to DeSales University, 3-2, in non-conference action in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening as the Greyhounds dropped their first match of the 2022 campaign. 

How It Happened

  • The Hounds took a quick 2-0 lead in the opening set; however, the Bulldogs came back and took a three-point lead at 11-8. DeSales extended its lead to 17-13 before a 6-1 run from the Blue and Grey had Moravian ahead 19-18. The Hounds scored four of the last five points to take the opening set 25-22
  • DeSales took an early 5-0 lead in the second set before the Greyhounds rallied to knot the score at 7-7. The Bulldogs eventually retook am 18-15 edge before senior libero Gabby Mancini served seven straight points as the Hounds moved ahead 22-18 on the way to another 25-22 set win
  • Moravian had an early 5-3 edge in the third set before a 14-2 run by DeSales had the Bulldogs up 17-7. DeSales finished the set with a 25-15 score
  • The fourth set was back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than three points until the Bulldogs took a 23-17 edge and evened the contest with a 25-22 set score
  • The final set was also close early and Moravian was up 6-5 before three points from DeSales had the Bulldogs in the lead for good as they took the set 15-10 to win the match 

Inside the Numbers

  • Sophomore middle blocker Jenna Deegan led the Greyhounds with 21 kills to go with 15 digs and a pair of service aces while junior outside hitter Hannah Hayes added nine kills and a pair of digs
  • Junior middle blocker Autumn Marrero had five kills, three service aces and a pair of blocks while sophomore right side hitter Mackenzie Krasley contributed four kills, three digs and two blocks
  • Senior setter Natalia Matos paced the Hounds offense with 35 assists to go with a team-high 26 digs and two kills
  • Mancini finished with 25 digs, five assists and four service aces to lead the Blue and Grey at the service line
  • Junior middle blocker Grace Silfani posted three kills and three blocks while junior defensive specialist Kat DeYesso had 16 digs and freshman defensive specialist Tamara Vasquez recorded eight digs
