Matos Reaches 1,000 Career Assists as Greyhounds Drop Tight Match to Lancaster Bible in Five Sets

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's volleyball team dropped a tight non-conference match to visiting Lancaster Bible College, 3-2, in Johnston Hall Monday evening as the squads rotated winning sets. 

How It Happened

  • The opening set started close with the Greyhounds up 5-3 and the Chargers coming back to move ahead 9-7. Lancaster Bible eventually took a 17-11 lead as the Chargers scored a 25-19 first set win
  • The second set saw Lancaster Bible open a 7-0 edge before the Blue and Grey got onto the scoreboard. The Chargers had a 15-5 advantage and still led 20-13 before a 7-0 run from the Hounds knotted the set at 20-20. Lancaster Bible came a point away from taking the set at 24-21 but Moravian rallied again to take a 25-24 lead. The Greyhounds eventually scored the final three points for a 30-28 set win to even the contest at 1-1
  • The third set saw the Chargers take an early lead once again. The Blue and Grey pulled within a point at 10-9; however, Lancaster Bible moved back ahead by five points. Once again, Moravian clawed back within one pint at 20-19 before the Chargers scored five of the final six points to take a 25-20 set win
  • After trading points to start the fourth set, the Hounds pulled away from a 7-7 tie to take a 17-9 lead. Lancaster Bible closed the deficit to three points at 19-16 but it was the Hounds that pushed ahead to capture the set 25-19 and force the deciding fifth set
  • Moravian jumped out to a 6-2 edge in the last set; however, the Chargers scored six straight points to lead 8-6 when the squads switched sides. The Hounds made it 8-7 but Lancaster Bible pulled away and won 15-12 to earn the 3-2 match victory

Inside the Numbers

  • Senior setter Natalia Matos paced the Moravian offense with 39 assists to go along with 15 digs and four kills. Midway through the third set, Matos recorded her 1,000th career assist as she became the ninth Greyhound in program history to reach the milestone
  • Sophomore right side hitter Makenzie Krasley led the Hounds with 14 kills on the night to go with three blocks and two digs while junior right side hitter Sophie Bauer added 10 kills
  • Junior middle blocker Grace Silfani registered nine kills and three blocks for the Blue & Grey while sophomore outside hitter Jenna Deegan contributed eight kills and four digs
  • Senior libero Gabby Mancini led Moravian with 27 digs to go with three assists while freshman defensive specialist Tamara Vasquez had 12 digs and a pair of service aces
  • Freshman outside hitter Caroline Melillo posted six kills and two digs while junior defensive specialist Allie Ludlow added 11 digs and junior defensive specialist Emily Szy had six digs
