Moravian Splits Opening Landmark Conference Matches of 2022

TOWSON, Md. --- The Moravian University women's volleyball team split its opening two matches of the 2022 Landmark Conference with the Greyhounds defeating host Goucher College, 3-1, before falling to Elizabethtown College, 3-0, Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened – Goucher Match

  • The first set against the Gophers went back-and-forth with the largest lead being four points for Goucher at 15-11 as the Gophers posted a 25-22 set win to take a 1-0 lead
  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the second set, and Moravian pushed the edge to 15-5 before winning 25-14 to even the score at 1-1
  • The Blue & Grey took a 3-0 advantage to start the third set. The Hounds were leading 11-8 before an 11-1 run pushed the edge to 22-9 before winning 25-11 to move ahead 2-1
  • The fourth set saw Moravian with a 6-2 advantage, and the game was tied at 13-13 when the Hounds scored four straight points to take the lead for good on the way to a 25-19 set win to capture the match
  • Sophomore right side hitter Makenzie Krasley led the Greyhounds with 13 kills, five digs and a block while junior middle blocker Grace Silfani and sophomore outside hitter Jenna Deegan both had 13 kills with Silfani adding six digs
  • Freshman outside hitter Caroline Melillo contributed 12 kills and seven digs while senior setter Natalia Matos recorded 48 assists, 10 digs and six kills. Senior libero Gabby Mancini led Moravian with 24 digs while junior defensive specialist Emily Szy added 19 digs and three service aces and junior defensive specialist Allie Ludlow had 14 digs
  • Freshman defensive specialist Tamara Vasquez contributed six digs while freshman middle blocker Davana Elysee had two blocks and two digs 

How It Happened – Elizabethtown Match

  • Moravian fell behind the Blue Jays, 7-2, early in the opening set, and Elizabethtown went on to post a 25-10 win to take a 1-0 lead
  • The second set was close early until the Blue Jays opened an 18-10 lead. The Hounds closed within two points at 21-20 before Elizabethtown earned a 25-20 victory to take a 2-0 edge
  • The third set went back-and-forth, and the game was tied at 12-12. From that point, Elizabethtown scored 13 of 18 points to win 25-17 and take the match
  • Deegan paced the Blue & Grey with eight kills to go with two digs and a block while Krasley had five kills and Melillo added four kills
  • Matos recorded 20 assists, 13 digs and four kills while Mancini had 16 digs
  • Junior right side hitter Sophie Bauer posted three kills and three digs while Silfani had two kills and two blocks
  • Vasquez added five digs while junior defensive specialist Kat DeYesso and freshman setter Ally Plitnick each had six digs
