Top 10 Stories of 2020-21 - #3 Softball Wins 9th Landmark Conference Title

2021 moravian softball after winning landmark conference title at blue and grey field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing its look back at its 2020-21 athletic campaign. The next entry in our countdown– the Top 10 Stories of the Year selected by the athletic administration – is our No. 3 highlight – the softball squad capturing the program's ninth Landmark Conference Championship.

The Greyhounds finished 2021 with a 31-3 record, the best winning percentage in school history (91.2%) and the fewest losses in a season. Head Coach John Byrne '82 has guided the Hounds to a total of 17 conference championships in his 28 seasons, and Moravian has played in the NCAA Division III Tournament 18 times including 2021 after earning the automatic bid to the tournament for winning the Landmark Conference title.

Due to the pandemic, this year's Landmark Conference Tournament followed a different format and finished with the top seeded Greyhounds hosting second seed The University of Scranton in a best-of-three series at Blue & Grey Field on May 15-16. The Greyhounds dropped the opening game of the series, 10-6, before winning the second game on Saturday, 6-4, to force the deciding game on Sunday.

In the final contest, the Hounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and led 8-0 before the Royals cut the score to 8-5. Senior catcher Brooke Wehr, who was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player as well as the 2021 Landmark Conference Player of the Year and a National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Third Team All-American, connected on a solo home run in the fifth inning to make it a 9-5 game, and that ended up being the winning run as Scranton scored three more times before Moravian clinched the title.
