BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2021-22 athletic campaign. The next contest in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 3 highlight – the women's tennis team earning a 5-2 win at second seed Goucher College in the Landmark Conference Semifinals on May 3.
]The victory was the fifth straight in the Landmark Conference Tournament for the Greyhounds, who were looking for their third consecutive Landmark Conference title after winning in 2019 and 2021, the last two tournaments that were contested. Moravian entered the match as the third seed and finished the year at 14-4 after falling to the top seed Drew University, 5-2, in the championship match four days after the match at Goucher.
The Hounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead against the Gophers as they swept the doubles action. Juniors Maddie Figiel and Cristina Merone posted an 8-6 win at second doubles to open the scoring while senior Morgan Colver and junior Julianne Cassady won 8-5 at first doubles. Sophomore Mara Stapleton and freshman Rose Lombardo completed the doubles sweep with an 8-5 triumph at third doubles.
As singles began, Moravian needed to capture just two of the six contests to earn the victory. Goucher captured the first two matches to finish at first and second singles before Figiel earned a 6-0, 7-5 win at third singles. Merone finished off the contest with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fourth singles to put the Greyhounds into the Landmark Conference Championship match for the seventh time in 14 seasons. Moravian has won five Landmark Conference titles with the two championship match losses both coming to Drew by 5-2 scores including 2022.
