BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Moravian University is continuing to look back at its 2021-22 athletic campaign. The next contest in the Top 10 Exciting Games from the past year is our No. 8 highlight – the football squad rallying for a 37-31, double-overtime win at McDaniel College on October 30.
The victory was the second of the season in overtime for the Greyhounds in Centennial Conference action, and the win improved Moravian to 9-3 all-time in overtime contests since the NCAA instituted the rule in 1996. This past fall marked the fourth time that the football program had played multiple overtime contests in a season.
The Hounds opened the scoring in the first quarter on a touchdown run from senior quarterback Christopher Mills. The Green Terror answered with the game's next 10 points to open a 10-7 lead midway through the third quarter.
Mills connected on a 26-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Nick Petros as Moravian moved back ahead; however, McDaniel scored another touchdown to lead 17-14 at the end of the third quarter. Mills found junior tight end Chris Carpini with an 11-yard scoring strike early in the fourth quarter as the Blue and Grey took a 21-17 edge.
McDaniel retook the advantage with a touchdown at the 5:49 mark, and the Green Terror had the ball with less than two minutes to play and the lead. The Greyhounds' defense made three straight stops and forced McDaniel to line up for a punt with 12 seconds remaining. The Green Terror snap would sail over the punter's head, and the Hounds took over at the McDaniel 12-yard line with just seven seconds left. Junior Trevor Yacuboski came in and connected on 29-yard field goal to knot the score at 24-24 and force overtime.
In the first overtime session, McDaniel had possession to begin and scored in four plays to take a 31-24 edge. The Greyhounds answered in just three plays as Mills connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Trevor Cunningham to send the contest to a second overtime at 31-31.
Moravian's defense held in the second overtime to force McDaniel to attempt a 37-yard field goal, that sailed wide left. The Green Terror were flagged for a penalty after the field goal try, which set the Greyhounds' offense up at the 12-yard line to begin their possession. Sophomore running back Nate Boyle scampered into the end zone on the first play for his second overtime-winning touchdown of the year as the Hounds won 37-31.
