BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- Dawn Ketterman-Benner, a former coach and athletic administrator, is being inducted into the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame on November 9, 2018 in Johnston Hall beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Ketterman-Benner, arrived at Moravian in 1971 as a health and physical education professor, and in her early years, she coached badminton, archery and the cheerleaders along with assisting with the field hockey team and intramurals. Over her 43-year career, she also served as Moravian's Primary Woman Administrator, which eventually became the Senior Woman Administrator under the NCAA, Associate Athletic Director and the Chairperson of Moravian's Physical Education Department.
After Title IX was passed in 1972, Ketterman-Benner helped Moravian re-introduce women's basketball and eventually add the sports of cross country, soccer, softball and volleyball. She served as the first head coach for the volleyball program, coaching the sport from 1975 until 1987 with an overall record of 165-103. In 1987, Ketterman-Benner took over the reins of the women's tennis program from the late Betty Prince. In 27-plus seasons, she led the Greyhounds to a 288-117 record and 11 conference championships. Ketterman-Benner also led Moravian to its first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 2007 and a another berth in 2011.
Ketterman-Benner is a member of the East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania Hall of Fame and was active in organizations outside of Moravian. She helped organize the Lehigh Valley Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (LVAIAW), and Ketterman-Benner was an early board member of the Lehigh Valley Tennis Association which has grown into the Eastern PA District Tennis Association, a group that honored her as well as the Middle States Tennis Association. Ketterman-Benner also helped bring the NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills program and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to Moravian, and she served on the tennis committees in both the Middle Atlantic Conference and Landmark Conference during her career. In 1975, Ketterman-Benner helped create the LVAIC Dance Consortium and Lehigh Valley Dance Forum, which hosted its 43rd Moravian show last spring, and she received the Distinguished Service in Dance Award in 1992.
Ketterman-Benner is being joined by women's soccer player Megan J. Collins '06; football student-athlete Dominick A. Cusumano '98; cross country and women's track runner Kristie Reccek Fach '99; football player Robert Hennessy '96; men's tennis player Gordon E. Rupert '66; and men's soccer player Greg D. Witt '88 in the class of 2018 that will be inducted into the Moravian College Athletic Hall of Fame. The 2006-07 women's tennis team that was coached by Ketterman-Benner will also be inducted that night while Robert E. Kafafian '77 will receive the Robert Martin Herbstman Award.
