NEW ORLEANS, La. --- The Moravian College men's and women's track & field teams had four student-athletes named as United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region honorees Monday.
The USTFCCCA is in its fourth year named All-Region selections for indoor and outdoor track & field at the NCAA Division III level after having All-Region honors in cross country for a number of years. For a student-athlete to earn All-Region honors, an athlete must be ranked in the top-5 of an individual event in the region according to the final Track & Field Results Reporting System data or be part of a top-3 relay team. Moravian is part of the Mideast Region.
The Greyhound men had three honorees with junior Justin Beasley-Turner in the 800-meter run, senior Scott Goodwin in the pole vault, and senior John Spirk in 60-meter hurdles. Beasley-Turner ran a PR time of 1:55.52 in the 800-meter run at the All-Atlantic Region Indoor Championships this past Saturday while Goodwin has a top height of 4.60 meters (15-1) set on February 16. Spirk recorded a top time and PR of 8.25 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles on December 8.
"Our region is the largest in the country in terms of numbers of schools and is as deep in talent as any so to finish All-Region truly is a tough accomplishment and something to be proud of," stated Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jesse Baumann. "I'm glad some of these athletes were able to receive some recognition, especially John Spirk and Scott Goodwin since they had some tough endings to their seasons for different reasons, with John missing NCAAs by literally the narrowest margin at 0.01 seconds, and Scott on the cusp of reaching NCAA heights but being set back with a hamstring pull his last two meets."
The Moravian women's team also had one student-athletes named to All-Region with junior Carly Danoski in the 800-meter run. Danoski set a school record in the event with a time of 2:14.13 back on February 8, and she has qualified for the 2019 NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships and is set to run in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run on Friday, March 8 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
"Carly had an extraordinary season as well and she'll be heading up to NCAAs this week, and then Justin was within a second of the NCAAs in the 800 and closed out the last week of indoors with a convincing win in his heat up at the AARTFC meet," Baumann said. "When you're able to earn All Region honors, you're definitely in the class of athletes capable of reaching NCAAs, something we're shooting for with the four of them in May again."
