Greyhounds Drop Landmark Conference Doubleheader to Elizabethtown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad dropped a Landmark Conference doubleheader to visiting Elizabethtown College Saturday at Gillespie Field, falling 7-4 in the opening game and 7-1 in the second contest that was shortened to eight innings as thunderstorms moved into the area. 

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Blue Jays scored a run in the top of the second inning for a 1-0
  • The Greyhounds countered with three runs in the bottom of the second to move ahead 3-1. Junior shortstop Paul Croyle and junior catcher Connor Wengryn both singled with one out before senior third baseman Mason Fisher connected on an RBI single to send Croyle across the plate to knot the score at 1-1. After the second out of the winning, senior left fielder Matt Madigan ripped a two-RBI single that scored Wengryn and Fisher
  • Elizabethtown answered with three runs in the top of the fourth to retake a 4-3 edge
  • The Blue Jays added a run in the fourth and two more in the eighth to extend the advantage to 7-3
  • The Blue & Grey scored once in the bottom of the ninth as Madigan was hit by a pitch to lead off and junior first baseman Cole Cherkas (Pittston, Pa./Pittston Area HS) connected on an RBI double down the left field line
  • Freshman Ross Huffman made the start on the hill for the Hounds and had three strikeouts in five innings of action while sophomore Matt Snyder struck out two in four innings of relief work

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Blue Jays took another early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning
  • Moravian cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second inning as Cherkas led off with a triple to center field and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Nick Henry
  • Elizabethtown would score a run in the third inning, three more in the fourth and once in the fifth to finish off the scoring in the game
  • Junior David Ciaccio started on the mound for Moravian and struck out three batters in four innings. Senior Ethan Weber also had three strikeouts in four innings of action 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 20 hits in the two contests with senior designated hitter Derek Holmes going 3-for-6. Croyle, Wengryn and Fisher were all 3-for-7 with a run scored with Fisher adding an RBI as well
  • Madigan went 3-for-8 with a run and two RBIs while Cherkas picked up two hits, a run, an RBI, a double and a triple. Henry, senior second baseman Chris Pow and junior center fielder Patrick Benolken all had one hit on the day with Henry adding an RBI
