Hounds Fall Twice to No. 11 Catholic on the Road

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University baseball squad dropped two games at No. 11 The Catholic University of America, falling 13-11 in game one played over two days due to the weather, and dropping the second contest, 13-4, Sunday.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Junior left fielder Patrick Benolken and senior designated hitter Derek Holmes had back-to-back singles to start the game, and junior first baseman Cole Cherkas followed with an RBI single to score Benolken. After a fielder's choice moved Holmes to third, senior second baseman Chris Pow hit an RBI sacrifice fly to bring Holmes across the plate. Junior shortstop Paul Croyle was hit by a pitch, and junior center fielder Matt Madigan drew a walk before a two-RBI single by junior catcher Connor Wengryn chased sophomore right fielder Nick Henry and Croyle home
  • The Cardinals answered with a run in the bottom of the first to make it 4-1
  • Moravian scored another run in the top of the second for a 5-1 edge. Holmes reached on a fielder's choice and raced home on an RBI groundout by Henry
  • The Blue & Grey made it 6-1 with a run in the third frame when Madigan singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Benolken
  • Catholic scored three times in the bottom of the third to pull within 6-4
  • The Hounds pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the fifth to make it 8-4. Madigan singled with one out and moved to third on a double off Wengryn's bat. Madigan raced home on an RBI single by senior third baseman Mason Fisher to make it 7-4 before a lightning delay postponed the rest of the contest to Sunday. When the game restarted, junior left fielder David Olsakowski reached on an RBI fielder's choice to score Wengryn
  • The Cardinals chased six runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead 10-8
  • Moravian countered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to knot the score at 10-10. Henry singled and scored on an RBI single off Madigan's bat while Pow raced home on a wild pitch
  • Catholic took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the eighth
  • The Greyhounds finished off the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth when Wengryn led off with an infield single and crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by Holmes
  • Sophomore Matt Snyder made the start on the mound for the Hounds, and he has two strikeouts in four innings. Junior David Ciaccio headed to the mound when the game restarted on Sunday, and he had two strikeouts in four innings of action

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Cardinals scored once in the first inning and three times in the second frame to take an early 4-0 lead in the full game on Sunday
  • The Blue & Grey got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Madigan and Wengryn hit back-to-back singles to start the frame, and Olsakowski drove in Madigan with an RBI single. Holmes brought in Wengryn with an RBI groundout
  • Catholic added a run in the bottom of the third for a 5-2 edge
  • Moravian plated a run in the top of the fourth when Henry was hit by a pitch and raced home from second base on an error by the Cardinals
  • The Hounds closed within a run at 5-4 in the fifth inning as Wengryn led off with a triple and came across the plate on an RBI single by Olsakowski
  • The Cardinals would score three times in the bottom of the fifth frame, three times in the seventh and twice in the eighth to finish off the scoring
  • Senior Noah Ingalls started on the mound for Moravian and had a strikeout in three innings of action. Senior Ethan Weber had two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work while freshman Ross Huffman added four strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Senior Andrew Connallon tossed the final inning and had one strikeout

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 22 hits in the two games with Madigan and Wengryn both going 5-for-7. Madigan added three runs, an RBI and two stolen bases while Wengryn had four runs, two RBIs, a double and a triple
  • Benolken and Fisher each contributed three hits with Benolken adding a run, a double and an RBI and Fisher driving in one run
  • Olsakowski contributed two hits and two RBIs while Cherkas had two hits and an RBI
  • Holmes added two runs, two RBIs and a hit while Henry posted a hit, three runs and an RBI
