Moravian Drops Final Home Game of 2023 at Gillespie Field to Cabrini in Non-Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team fell to visiting Cabrini University, 14-7, in non-conference action Tuesday in the Greyhounds final home game of the 2023 season at Gillespie Field.

How It Happened

  • The Hounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior center fielder Matt Madigan led off with a single through the left side, and senior third baseman Mason Fisher followed with a single to left field. Junior designated hitter Cole Cherkas ripped a three-run homer over the fence in right field for his first home run of the season and second of his career to give the Blue & Grey and early advantage
  • The Cavaliers took the lead for good with a seven-run third inning to move ahead 7-3
  • Moravian got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when freshman first baseman Sean Superka was hit by a pitch and eventually crossed the plate on an RBI groundout by freshman second baseman Owen Hutchinson
  • Cabrini tacked on two runs in the fifth inning, two more in the sixth frame and another two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 13-4 lead
  • The Greyhounds got a run in the bottom of the eighth inning when junior outfielder David Olsakowski singled with one out and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from freshman shortstop Dimitri Laoutaris
  • The Cavaliers plated a run in the top of the ninth for their final run of the afternoon
  • Moravian finished off the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Chris Pow led off with a pinch hit single while Madigan connected on a double to put two runners in scoring position. Pow raced home on an RBI groundout from Fisher while Madigan scored on an RBI ground out from senior designated hitter Derek Holmes

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 12 hits in the game with Madigan going 3-for-5 with a pair of runs
  • Fisher was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, and Fisher became the 40th player in program history to reach 100 career hits with a single in the third inning
  • Olsakowski was also 2-for-5 on the day with a run while Cherkas was 1-for-2 with his three-run homer
  • Laoutaris had a hit and an RBI while Pow, sophomore catcher Ayden Dunbar and freshman catcher James Ruban III each had a hit with Pow scoring once
  • Hutchinson and Holmes both drove in a run while Superka cross the plate once
  • Senior Andrew Connallon started on the mound and had two strikeouts in two innings of action while senior Kenny Kunzman added two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Junior Aaron Flyte tossed 2.2 innings with a strikeout while senior Garrison Koch struck out two batters in two innings
