Greyhounds Sweep Doubleheader at Juniata with Pair of Extra Inning Victories

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad swept a Landmark Conference doubleheader at Juniata College Wednesday with a pair of extra inning victories as the Greyhounds took the opener 8-7 in 11 innings before winning the nightcap 15-14 in 10 innings.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a solo home run by junior catcher Connor Wengryn, his first career homer
  • Moravian doubled the advantage to 2-0 with a run in the fifth inning. Senior designated hitter Derek Holmes connected on a one-out single, and he raced home on an RBI sacrifice fly from junior shortstop Paul Croyle
  • The Eagles broke onto the scoreboard with a run in the sixth inning to cut the Hounds edge to 2-1
  • The Blue & Grey plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to stretch the advantage to 4-1. Senior third baseman Mason Fisher led off with a bunt single before Holmes was hit by a pitch. Senior second baseman Chris Pow drove in Fisher with an RBI double while Holmes scored on another sacrifice fly by Croyle
  • Juniata scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at 4-4
  • Moravian pulled back in front with a run in the eighth inning for a 5-4 edge. Wengryn led off with a double, and he scored on an RBI single from junior centerfielder Matt Madigan
  • The Greyhounds added two runs in the top of the ninth for a 7-4 advantage. Croyle, sophomore right fielder Nick Henry and Wengryn all hit singles to load the bases before Croyle raced home on a wild pitch. Freshman first baseman Sean Superka added an RBI groundout to bring in Henry
  • The Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game again at 7-7 and force extra innings
  • Moravian would win the game with a run in the top of the 11th inning. Croyle and Henry both had singles before a ground out by Wengryn chased Croyle home with the decisive run
  • Senior Noah Ingalls started on the mound for the Hounds, and he a career-high eight strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Sophomore Matt Snyder tossed 2.1 innings with a strikeout while sophomore Chris Medei picked up his first win of the season and his career with two innings of scoreless relief that included four strikeouts

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Hounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the second contest. Madigan and Fisher started things off with back-to-back singles before a two-RBI double from Holmes scored both runners. Pow followed with an RBI single to bring in Holmes while Pow crossed the plate on an RBI ground out by Henry. Croyle, who had singled earlier in the inning, scored the final run of the frame on an RBI single from Wengryn
  • Juniata answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to make it 5-4
  • Moravian scored once in the top of the second inning for a 6-4 edge. Holmes drew a two-out walk and raced all the way home on an RBI double off Pow's bat
  • The Eagles also scored a run on the second inning to set the score at 6-5
  • The Blue & Grey pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the third for an 8-5 advantage. Henry led off with a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from sophomore right fielder Jaden Clements. Fisher would drive Clements in with an RBI single later in the inning
  • Juniata scored four times in the bottom of the third to take a 9-8 lead
  • Moravian came right back with two runs in the top of the fourth to move back ahead 10-9. Pow walked and came home on an RBI infield single by Clements while Wengryn, who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored on an RBI single by junior left fielder David Olsakowski
  • The Greyhounds made it 11-9 in the top of the fifth inning when Holmes singles and scored on an RBI single by Henry
  • The Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 11-10
  • The Blue & Grey tacked on another run in the top of the sixth when Olsakowski was hit by a pitch and scored on an RBI ground out by Fisher
  • Juniata made it a one-run game again in the bottom of the seventh with a run to set the score at 12-11 for the Hounds
  • Moravian scored twice in the top of the eighth for a 14-11 advantage. Olsakowski and Madigan each had one-out singles before racing home on a two-RBI double from Fisher
  • The Eagles countered with a pair of runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to knot the score at 14-14 and send the contest to extra innings again
  • The Greyhounds plated the winning run in the top of the tenth when Madigan led off with a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Pow
  • Freshman Ross Huffman started on the hill for the Blue & Grey and posted a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Junior Aaron Flyte had two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of action while junior David Ciaccio earned his second victory of the season with 2.1 innings of relief work
  • Moravian improved to 3-0 on the season in extra innings

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 41 hits in the doubleheader with Wengryn going 6-for-11 with three runs scored, three RBIs, a homer and a double
  • Holmes was 5-for-9 with five runs, two RBIs and a double while Henry went 5-for-10 with two runs and two RBIs
  • Pow recorded five hits, four RBIs, two runs and a pair of doubles while Madigan also had five hits with three runs and an RBI
  • Croyle posted four hits with three runs and two RBIs while Fisher added four hits, two runs, four RBIs and a double in the two games
  • Olsakowski had three hits, two runs and an RBI while Superka and Clements both had two hits with Superkas recording an RBI and Clements contributing two RBIs and a run
