Greyhounds Split Landmark Conference Doubleheader with Susquehanna

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with Susquehanna University at Gillespie Field Saturday, winning the opener, 7-4, and falling in the nightcap, 15-3.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Greyhounds took 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Junior shortstop Paul Croyle drew a leadoff win and moved to third on a one-out single by senior second baseman Chris Pow. Sophomore right fielder Nick Henry followed with an RBI single to score Croyle while Pow raced across the plate on an RBI fielder's choice of the bat of junior catcher Connor Wengryn
  • The River Hawks cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning, and Susquehanna took a 4-2 edge with three runs in the fifth frame
  • Moravian answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-3 as senior designated hitter Derek Holmes connected on a one-out solo home run, his third homer of the season and the eighth of his career
  • The Blue & Grey knotted the score at 4-4 with a run in the seventh inning. Junior center fielder Matt Madigan led off with a single and moved to third when Holmes reached on an error. Madigan scampered across the plate on a wild pitch
  • The Hounds scored three times in the bottom of the eighth frame to move back in front. Pow and Henry had back-to-back singles before a bunt single by Wengryn loaded the bases. Senior third baseman Mason Fisher hit an RBI single to score sophomore pinch runner Ayden Dunbar, and Madigan followed with a two-RBI single that plated Henry and Wengryn
  • Junior David Ciaccio made the start on the mound and recorded his first win of the season while striking out three batters in eight innings of action. Sophomore Matt Snyder struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth for his first career save
  • The victory was the first win at Gillespie Field for first-year Head Coach Douglas Coe, and the contest took just two hours and five minutes to complete

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The River Hawks scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning in the second contest
  • Moravian countered with a run in the bottom of the first as Madigan led off with a triple and trotted home on an RBI double by Holmes
  • Susquehanna plated seven runs in the top of the second frame to extend the advantage to 9-1
  • The Hounds scored once in the bottom of the second inning as Henry hit a one-out single followed by a double from Wengryn and an RBI ground out by Fisher
  • The River Hawks scored three more runs in the top of the third, twice in the fifth and once in the seventh for a 15-2 edge
  • The Blue & Grey scored their final run in the bottom of the seventh when Fisher led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and raced home on an RBI single by freshman second baseman Owen Hutchinson
  • Senior Noah Ingalls made the start and tossed an inning for the Greyhounds while senior Andrew Connallon saw 1.1 innings of action. Junior Aaron Flyte struck out four batters in 2.2 innings of work while freshman Stefano Garofalo tossed two innings. Senior Tyler Valentine pitched the final two frames and record three strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 21 hits in the two games with Madigan going 4-for-8 with two runs, two RBIs, a triple and a stolen base
  • Holmes recorded three hits with a pair of RBIs, a run, a double and a homer while Henry had three hits with two runs and an RBI. Fisher also contributed three hits with two RBIs and a run
  • Wengryn had two hits with a double, a run and an RBI while Pow added two hits and a run
  • Hutchinson posted a hit and an RBI while Croyle and Dunbar each crossed the plate once
  • The Hounds' other three hits came from junior left fielder David Olsakowski, junior center fielder Patrick Benolken and freshman infielder Dimitri Laoutaris
