Moravian Drops Landmark Conference Series Finale to Elizabethtown

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team dropped the final game of a Landmark Conference series to visiting Elizabethtown College, 16-5, at Gillespie Field Sunday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Blue Jays pushed a pair of runs across the plate in the top of the first inning to build a 2-0 lead
  • The Greyhounds answered with four runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 4-2 advantage. Senior center fielder Matt Madigan and senior designated hitter Derek Holmes had back-to-back singles to start the frame. Junior first baseman Cole Cherkas ripped an RBI double to left center to bring in Madigan while Holmes came across the plate on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Nick Henry. Junior catcher Conner Wengryn connected on an RBI single to left field that scored Cherkas while junior left fielder David Olsakowski hit an RBI single to left that brought in Henry with the final run of the inning
  • Elizabethtown cut the Hounds' edge to one at 4-3 with a run in the top of the second
  • The Blue Jays moved back in front with two runs in the top half of the third frame on a home run to take a 5-4 advantage
  • Elizabethtown stretched its lead to 7-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, and the Blue Jays scored five times in the top of the fifth for an 11-4 advantage. Elizabethtown would add two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings
  • Moravian scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning when junior shortstop Paul Croyle drew a two-out walk. Freshman infielder Dimitri Laoutaris came in to pinch run, and he moved into scoring position when Henry drew a base on balls. Freshman catcher James Ruban III came in as a pinch hitter and ripped an RBI single to left center for his first career hit and to bring Laoutaris across the plate

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had nine hits in the contest with Cherkas going 2-for-3 with a run, a double and an RBI
  • Olsakowski was 2-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base while Henry was 1-for-2 with a run, an RBI, two walks and a stolen base
  • Madigan and Holmes both had a hit and scored a run while Wengryn and Ruban both ahadhd a hit and an RBI
  • Senior Noah Ingalls started on the mound for the Blue & Grey and had two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work. Senior Andrew Connallon tossed two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts while freshman Stefano Garofalo pitched 1.2 innings. Junior Aaron Flyte posted two strikeouts in two innings of action while junior Rony Minier pitched the final inning of the contest
