Greyhounds Knock Off No. 17 Catholic in Final Game of Landmark Conference Series

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Moravian University baseball squad knocked off No. 17 The Catholic University of America, 12-10, Wednesday to complete a Landmark Conference series that began two weeks ago but had the final game postponed due to the weather. 

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior first baseman Derek Holmes reached on an error with two outs and raced around the bases on an RBI double by senior second baseman Chris Pow
  • Moravian pushed the edge to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top half of the third frame. Junior center fielder Matt Magidan began the inning with a base hit, and senior third baseman Mason Fisher followed with a hit. After Holmes was intentionally walked, the Cardinals recorded two outs before junior left fielder David Olsakowski ripped a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Madigan and Fisher
  • Catholic got onto the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the score to 3-1
  • The Hounds countered with six runs in the top of the fifth to push the advantage to 9-1. Pow drew a leadoff walk while sophomore right fielder Nick Henry connected on a single. Olsakowski followed with another RBI double down the left field line as Poe scampered home before junior shortstop Paul Croyle ripped a two-RBI double that plated Henry and Olsakowski. Junior catcher Connor Wengryn hit an infield single before Croyle scored on an error on a ball hit by freshman designated hitter James Ruban III. Madigan would reach on an error before Fisher connected on an RBI sacrifice fly to score Ruban. Holmes drove in Madigan with the final run of the inning when he hit an RBI single
  • The Cardinals scored once in the bottom of the fifth to make it 9-2
  • Moravian plated three more runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 12-2. Madigan and Fisher started the inning with singles before a double play left Madigan at third base. Pow would connect on an RBI single to chase Madigan home while Henry followed with an RBI single. Olsakowski added another RBI hit with a single down the left field line to score Pow while Henry scored the final run of the frame on an error
  • Catholic chased in six runs in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth before the Blue & Grey were able to record the final out of the contest 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 16 hits in the contest with Henry going 4-for-6 with two runs while Olsakowski was 3-for-5 with four RBIs, two doubles and a run
  • Fisher was also 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI while Madigan was 2-for-5 with three runs. Pow and Croyle also recorded a 2-for-5 days with two RBIs and a double with Pow scoring twice and Croyle once
  • Holmes contributed a hit, a run and an RBI while Ruban had a hit and an RBI and Wengryn added a hit
  • Senior Tyler Valentine earned his first win of the season on the mound for the Hounds as he struck out six batters in five innings of action. Freshman Stefano Garofalo recorded three strikeouts in two innings of work while sophomore Chris Medei had one strikeout in an inning of action. Sophomore Matt Snyder tossed the final inning of the game
