Greyhounds Close Out 2023 Campaign at SUNY Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. --- The Moravian University baseball squad closed out with a pair of losses, falling 12-0 and 16-4, in a non-conference doubleheader at SUNY Cortland Saturday.

How It Happened – Game #1

  • The Red Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and SUNY Cortland added three runs in the second and another in the third for a 6-0 advantage
  • SUNY Cortland scored four more runs in the sixth frame to make it 10-0, and the Red Dragons tacked on two runs in the eighth to finish the scoring
  • Senior Kenny Kunzman made the start on the mound for the Greyhounds, and he tossed four innings while junior Rony Minier had a strikeout in 1.2 innings of action. Senior Garrison Koch pitched 2.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts 

How It Happened – Game #2

  • Cortland State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning in game two, and the Red Dragons added four runs in the third and three more in the fourth frame to take a 10-0 advantage
  • Cortland made it 16-0 with a six-run fifth inning
  • Moravian got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with two runs. Junior center fielder Matt Madigan and senior third baseman Mason Fisher both had one-out singles before senior first baseman Derek Holmes connected on an RBI double to bring in Madigan. Senior second baseman Chris Pow added an RBI single to score Fisher
  • The Greyhounds added two more runs in the seventh to make it 16-4. Junior shortstop Paul Croyle hit a one-out single before freshman designated hitter James Ruban III hit a two-run homer to left center, his first collegiate homer
  • Junior David Ciaccio started on the mound for the Hounds, and he one strikeout in four innings of action. Senior Matt Ciarrocchi saw action in the fifth inning while senior Andrew Connallon, freshman Max Sponheimer, senior Noah Ingalls and sophomore Matt Snyder all tossed one inning with Ingalls recording three strikeouts

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 13 hits in the doubleheader with Croyle collecting three hits and a run
  • Ruban was 2-for-4 with a run, two RBIs and his homer while Madigan, Holmes and Pow each had two hits with Madigan scoring once and Holmes and Pow each picking up and RBI
  • Fisher and sophomore right fielder Nick Henry both had one hit with Fisher crossing the plate once
