Moravian Drops Landmark Conference Series Opener to Susquehanna

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball team dropped the opening game of a Landmark Conference series with Susquehanna University at Gillespie Field, falling 10-3, in the opener Friday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The River Hawks took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning, and Susquehanna doubled the edge to 2-0 with another run in the top of the second frame
  • The Greyhounds got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senior third baseman Mason Fisher led off with a single and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on an RBI sacrifice fly by senior designated hitter Derek Holmes
  • The River Hawks countered with a pair of runs in the top half of the fourth to stretch the advantage to 4-1
  • Susquehanna plated five runs in the top of the eighth to extend the lead to 9-1, and the River Hawks finished off with a run in the top of the 9th
  • The Hounds scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to finish of the scoring. Junior first baseman Cole Cherkas led off with a single, and freshman pinch runner Dimitri Laoutaris raced home from second on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Nick Henry. Fisher drew a bases loaded walk to push senior second baseman Chris Pow across the plate after Pow had walked earlier in the inning

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had five hits in the contest with Henry going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Cherkas recording a 2-for-3 game with an RBI
  • Fisher added a hit, a run and an RBI while Pow and Laoutaris both scored a run
  • Freshman Ross Huffman started on the mound for the Hounds, and he struck out five in five innings of action. Senior Ethan Weber tossed three innings with two strikeouts while junior Rony Minier pitched the final inning
