Greyhounds Earn Walk-Off Win on Henry Homer in Extra Innings to Split with Scranton

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University baseball squad won the suspended game of a doubleheader from Saturday with a walk-off homer in the 12th inning, 11-8, Sunday before falling to visiting The University of Scranton, 5-3, in the series finale. 

How It Happened – Game #1 – Started Saturday as part of DH but suspended due to lightning

  • The Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning
  • The Greyhounds countered with a run in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 2-1. Senior second baseman Chris Pow led off the inning with a double down the left field for his 100th career hit, becoming the 39th player in program history to reach the milestone. Pow crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior catcher Connor Wengryn
  • Scranton scored twice in the top of the third inning, once in the fourth and twice in the fifth frame to extend its lead to 7-1
  • Moravian plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 7-3. Senior designated hitter Derek Holmes led off with a double and scored on an RBI single by junior first baseman Cole Cherkas. Cherkas scampered across the plate on an RBI groundout from junior shortstop Paul Croyle
  • The Hounds chased five runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-7 lead. Junior left fielder Patrick Benolken hit a one out single and moved to third on a single off Holmes' bat. Cherkas connected on an RBI single to bring in Benolken while Holmes raced home on an RBI single from sophomore right fielder Nick Henry. After a single by Pow loaded the bases, Cherkas came across the plate on a wild pitch. Croyle was hit by a pitch to load the bases again when Wengryn drew an RBI walk to push Henry home. Senior third baseman Mason Fisher reached on an error that allow Pow to score the go ahead run
  • The Royals answered with a run in the top of the seventh to knot the score at 8-8
  • The Greyhounds had two runners on and just one out in the bottom of the eighth when the second lightning delay of the game forced the squads to postpone the remainder of the contest to Sunday
  • When play resumed, Hounds were unable to score with Moravian leaving two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings. The Blue & Grey also had the bases loaded in the tenth inning but play continued
  • The Greyhounds would get three runs in the bottom of the 12th frame for the victory. With two outs, Holmes had an infield single while freshman first baseman Sean Superka reached on a fielder's choice with Holmes safe at second base. Henry followed with a three-run homer to left center field with the ball hitting the top of the fence and bouncing over for his first home run of the season and first of his collegiate career
  • Senior Noah Ingalls started on the mound for Moravian and struck out three in four innings of action. Senior Matt Ciarrocchi tossed an inning with one strikeout while senior AJ Gordon pitched two innings. Senior Tyler Valentine recorded a strikeout in his inning on the mound while sophomore Matt Snyder came in Sunday when play resumed and struck out six in four innings of action to improve to 2-1 on the season

How It Happened – Game #2

  • The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of the regularly schedule game on Sunday
  • Scranton added two more runs in the fifth frame for a 3-0 edge
  • Moravian got onto the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut it to 3-2. Wengryn led off the inning with a single. Benolken was hit by a pitch and Holmes added a single to load the bases before Cherkas connected on a two-RBI single as Wengryn and Benolken scored
  • The Hounds plated the tying run in the bottom of the eighth frame to make it 3-3. Pow drew a leadoff walk and raced home from second on an RBI single from Wengryn
  • The Royals scored twice in the top of the ninth for the win
  • Freshman Ross Huffman started on the mound for the Blue & Grey and recorded three strikeouts in seven innings of action while senior Ethan Weber had one strikeout in two innings 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 31 hits in the two games with Cherkas going 9-for-10 including a school-record tying six hits in the suspended game. He also had four RBIs and scored twice in the two contests
  • Holmes was 7-for-12 with three runs and a pair of doubles while Pow, Henry, Wengryn and Fisher all collected three hits. Pow added three runs and a double for his milestone 100th hit while Henry had four RBIS, two runs and the winning homer. Wengryn recorded three RBIs and a run and Fisher contributed an RBI
  • Benolken had a hit and scored twice while Croyle contributed a hit and an RBI and junior center fielder Matt Madigan had one hit and Superka scored a run
