Moravian Holds on Versus Penn State Brandywine to Give Keckler First Win Leading the Greyhounds

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University men's basketball squad led by as many as 26 points and held on for an 88-83 victory over visiting Penn State Brandywine in non-conference action in Johnston Hall Saturday evening to give Head Coach Darryl Keckler his first win leading the Greyhounds.

How It Happened

  • The Hounds took a 3-0 lead just 15 seconds into the contest as freshman guard Porter Kelly drained the opening shot of the game. The Lions knotted the contest at 5-5 before a 12-0 run from Moravian capped by a three-pointer from junior forward Mike DiPietro opened a 17-5 lead at the 15:58 mark. The Blue and Grey had a 32-14 advantage at the midpoint of the first half after a three-pointer from junior guard C.J. Weber
  • Moravian continued to push ahead with the lead making it up to 26 points at 47-21 with 3:52 until halftime on a lay-up by junior guard Alex Dietz. Dietz also netted the Hounds' final points of the half with a three-pointer as the Greyhounds headed to the locker room with a 55-33 edge
  • Penn State Brandywine came out in the second half and would cut the deficit in half in the first 4:40 of action as Moravian's advantage dwindled to 11 points at 61-50. The Hounds responded and pushed the lead back to 19 points at 71-52 with 12:12 to go on a lay-up from freshman forward Marquis Ratcliff. Over the next four minutes, the only four points scored came from the Lions before a tip-in by Ratcliff has the Greyhounds leading 73-56 with just under eight minutes to play
  • Moravian continued to lead by double digits, and the Hounds had an 86-71 edge with junior over two minutes to go after a three-pointer by sophomore forward Nate Santiago. However, the Blue and Grey were limited to just two points on free throws in the remainder of the game as the Lions closed within five points at the buzzer 

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds have five players in double figures with Kelly netting a career-high 20 points to go with four assists. Ratcliff also netted a career-best 19 points to go along with nine rebounds, for blocked shots and a pair of steals while Dietz netted 13 points
  • Santiago and graduate student guard Danny Cooper both scored 11 points with Santiago adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals and Cooper contributing seven assists, three steals and a pair of boards
  • DiPietro netted seven pings while Weber had five points and senior guard Nate Dougherty added three rebounds and two points
  • Sophomore forward Michael Leonardo grabbed seven rebounds for the Hounds to go with a par of assists
  • Moravian shot 34-of-69 from the floor (49.3 percent), and the Hounds were 12-for-34 beyond the three-point line
  • The Blue and Grey forced the Lions into 26 turnovers in the contest while committing just 20 turnovers
