Greyhounds Come Back from Double Digit Deficit Against Drew for Second Time This Season

MADISON, N.J. --- For the second time this season, the Moravian University men's basketball team rallied from a double-digit deficit to defeat Drew University in Landmark Conference action, this time rallying from 15 points down in the first half for an 87-81 victory on the road Wednesday evening.

How It Happened

  • The Greyhounds scored first as freshman forward Marquis Ratcliff sank a lay-up a little over a minute into action. The Rangers tied the game, but three-pointers from junior forward Mike DiPietro and freshman guard Porter Kelly had the Hounds up 8-2. Drew answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-8 edge while Moravian countered and lead 16-12 after a three-pointer from sophomore guard/forward Michael Leonardo at the 15:05 mark. Once again, the Rangers went on a run, this time a 16-3 stretch, to take a 28-19 lead with 10:32 left in the opening half
  • The Hounds closed within five points at 28-23 after two free throws from junior guard Alex Dietz at the 8:42 mark, but Drew posted a 12-2 run to go up 40-25 with 3:44 until the intermission. The Blue and Grey closed the gap down to six points twice before the Rangers headed to the locker room with a 44-36 edge
  • Drew extended the advantage back into double digits, leading 48-37 just a minute and a half into the second half before a 10-0 run from Moravian made it a one-point contest at 48-47 after a lay-up from DiPietro at the 16:44 mark. The Greyhounds knotted the score at 52-52 on a three-pointer by Leonardo only to see the Rangers go back up by six points at 61-55. The Hounds countered again and tied the game for a fourth time at 62-62 with just under 11 minutes to go
  • The Rangers held a 69-64 edge with 8:24 on the clock before a 7-0 run from Moravian capped by a three-pointer by Dietz put the Greyhounds ahead for good at 71-69 with 5:21 remaining. Drew made it 71-70 with a free throw, but the Blue and Grey scored the next seven points with sophomore forward Nate Santiago connecting on a three-point play and Dietz adding a three-pointer and a free throw. The Rangers closed within two points before a three-pointer and free throw from Leonardo sealed the win 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had four players in double figures led by Dietz, who had 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals. Ratcliff had his fifth double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds to go with three assists and a pair of blocked shots while Kelly finished with 13 points and three boards and Leonardo added 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists
  • DiPietro and Santiago both netted six points with DiPietro recording six rebounds and two assists while junior guard Filippo Baldo had five points
  • Junior guard Mark Howell and freshman forward Uma Kalu each scored two points
  • The Greyhounds shot 28-for-54 from the field, 9-for-19 beyond the three-point line and 22-for-32 at the foul line
  • The Hounds finished the night with a 44-33 edge in rebounds including 34-19 on the defensive boards
