Men's Tennis Claims Top Seed in ECAC DIII Outdoor Championships for 2nd Straight Year

DANBURY, Conn. --- The Moravian College men's tennis team has received the top seed for the second straight year in the 2016 ECAC Division III Men's Outdoor Tennis Championship, and the Greyhounds, who are the tournament's defending champion, will play fourth seed Stevenson University on Saturday, May 14 at 3:00 p.m. at Arcadia University in the semifinals.

The host Knights will play second seed The United States Merchant Marine Academy in the first match of the tournament on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Sunday's schedule includes the third-place match at 12:00 p.m. followed by the championship contest at 3:00 p.m.

First-year Head Coach Alan Heverly has led the Greyhounds to a 12-6 mark on the season, and the Blue & Grey were 4-4 in the Landmark Conference regular season including a 5-4 victory over USMMA on April 10.

Moravian, which won the inaugural ECAC Division III Outdoor Championship last spring as the program's first-ever postseason title of any kind, is led on the court by senior Matt Tuorto, who has a 12-7 record including an 11-6 record at first singles while senior John Wylie is 13-6 overall and 13-4 at second singles. Freshman Peter Demyan has a 12-5 mark in his debut season including an 11-3 slate at sixth singles while senior C.J. Widdifield, who was the Most Outstanding Player at last year's ECAC Championships, has six singles wins this year while playing fourth singles. Sophomore Giovanni Lombardi has posted two victories while playing third singles while freshman Isaac Schefer has a pair of wins in limited action at fifth singles.

Tuorto and Wylie are the Greyhounds' top doubles pairing and have combined for a 17-3 mark this season, tying their school record win total from last year. The duo is 15-3 at first doubles this spring, and they have won a school record 55 matches during their careers. Widdifield and Lombardi are 9-10 overall and 8-8 at second doubles while Demyan and Schefer are 3-2 at third doubles for Moravian.
