BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian College women's track & field squad is in second place after the first day of the 2017 Landmark Conference Championships being hosted by the Greyhounds at Timothy Breidegam Track and Rocco Calvo Field this weekend.
Moravian has 78 points and trail Elizabethtown College by three points after six completed events.
The Hounds had event champions in all four field events to be competed on Saturday. Junior Beth Ann Davies won the pole vault for a second straight year with a winning height of 3.04 meters (9-11.75) while junior Melissa Cheong repeated as the long jump champion with an ECAC qualifying leap of 5.57 meters (18-3.25). Junior Trista Cunningham won the discus for the second consecutive spring with a toss of 35.56 meters (119-11) while senior Jackie Finnegan captured first in the hammer throw with a meet record and ECAC qualifying toss of 47.50 meters (155-10).
Senior Lauren Suelke placed third in the long jump with a leap of 5.05 meters (16-7) while junior Carly Thorpe was fifth at 4.91 meters (16-1.5) and junior Casie Cronk in eighth with a leap of 4.74 meters (15-6.75) to earn points in the team standings. Finnegan was the runner-up in the discus with a toss of 34.91 meters (114-6) while freshman Vanessa Blose finished fifth with a distance of 32.84 meter (107-9). Cunningham took fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 42.95 meters (140-11) while junior Maggie Heft placed fifth at 41.30 meters (135-6).
The Greyhounds scored four points in the 10,000-meter run with senior Larissa Strycharz finishing sixth in 42:23.89 and freshman Marlee Hornbaker in eighth in a time of 43:55.35. Freshman Carly Danoski picked up two points with a seventh place finish in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:55.87
In preliminary action, freshman Lily Cooper reached the finals of the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.93 seconds, which ranked fourth, and senior Lauren White was fifth in 13.05 seconds and freshman Meghan Lazarchak finished eighth in 13.38 seconds to advance to Sunday's final. Cooper also had the second-best qualifying time in the 200-meter dash in 26.65 seconds, and White also made the final in 27.10 seconds. Moravian had five competitors advance to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with sophomore Amari Schooler in first in an ECAC qualifying time of 15.17 seconds, Cheong is second at an ECAC qualifying time of 15.74 seconds, senior Rebecca Flitcroft in third at 16.19 seconds, sophomore Anna Osman in fourth at 16.41 seconds and senior Holly Wagner in seventh in 17.60 seconds.
Action on the second day of the 2017 Landmark Conference Championship is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 7 with the women's javelin.
