Moravian Races Past Juniata to Begin 2021-22 Landmark Conference Schedule

HUNTINGDON, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad had a two-point lead after the first quarter, and then held host Juniata College to just 16 points over the next 20 minutes while scoring 33 points as the Greyhounds opened the 2021-22 Landmark Conference season with a 63-41 win over the Eagles Saturday. 

How It Happened

  • Juniata opened the scoring before a jumper from junior guard Morgan Amy and a lay-up by senior forward Kayla Yoegel had the Hounds up 4-2. The Blue and Grey had an 8-4 edge after a jumper by Yoegel with 3:49 left in the first quarter, but the Eagles came back to knot the score at 11-11. Sophomore guard Reganne Flannery hit a late jumper as Moravian led 13-11 after 10 minutes of action
  • The Eagles netted the first four points of the second quarter to take their first lead of the contest, and Juniata led 17-16 when freshman forward Brielle Guarente connected on a lay-up at the 3:09 mark of the second quarter to give the Greyhounds the lead for good at 18-17. Sophomore forward Sam Osorio hit two free throws in the final 30 seconds of the half to send the Hounds to the locker room with a 25-19 edge
  • Osorio and Yoegel both made lay-ups at the start of the third quarter as Moravian pushed the lead into double digits, and except for a brief 22 seconds, the Greyhounds kept the advantage over 10 points for the remainder of the contest. Yoegel extended the Moravian lead to 20 points at 46-26 late in the third quarter, and after a free throw by Juniata, the Blue and Grey led 46-27 after 30 minutes of play
  • Moravian took the advantage to 25 points twice during the final quarter before earning the win 

Inside the Numbers

  • The Greyhounds had a pair of players score in double figures with Yoegel tossing in 13 points to go with a pair of blocked shots and six rebounds while Osorio had 12 points, seven boards, two assists and two blocked shots
  • Junior guard Madison Amy contributed eight points, and she tied her career high with six assists while junior guard Ashley Robinson had career highs of seven points and four boards
  • Flannery finished with five points and a pair of assists while Guarente added four points and two rebounds. Morgan Amy also had four points to with three assists and four steals, which tied her career high, while sophomore guard Vicky Donovan and freshman guard Sydney DeFranco both had a career-best three points
  • Sophomore forward Gracie Hezel tied her career high with seven rebounds to go along with two points while junior guard Jackie Kelly added two points, two boards and a pair of steals and freshman guard Brielle Smith had two rebounds
  • Moravian shot 55.2 percent (16-for-29) from the floor in the second half and made 3-of-6 three-pointers after the intermission as well
  • The Hounds forced the Eagles into 24 turnovers while committing just 13 miscues in the game
  • All 17 players that were dressed for the Greyhounds saw at least two minutes of action in the contest
