Greyhounds Use Decisive Second Quarter to Defeat Drew in Landmark Conference Action

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University women's basketball squad outscored visiting Drew University 13-5 in the second quarter to head to the intermission with a 28-23 lead on the way to a 66-56 Landmark Conference victory in Johnston Hall Wednesday evening that moved the Greyhounds and Rangers into a tie for the final playoff spot for the 2021-22 Landmark Conference Tournament with one game to play in the regular season.

How It Happened

  • The Rangers opened the scoring while a three-pointer from senior forward Kayla Yoegel gave Moravian a 3-2 edge. The first quarter would remain close with the lead switching a total of eight times before Drew went on a 6-0 run to take a 17-12 advantage with 47 seconds left in the opening quarter. The Rangers had an 18-15 lead after 10 minutes of action
  • Sophomore forward Sam Osorio connected on back-to-back lay-ups to begin the second quarter as the Greyhounds took a 19-18 lead. Osorio added a free throw to make it 20-18 before Drew knotted the contest for the second time at 20-20 at the 7:17 mark. The squads would go scoreless for nearly five minutes before a lay-up by Osorio with 2:23 before the intermission put the Blue and Grey in the lead for good. Junior forward Emily Markowski hit on a three-point play to push the edge to 26-20 while a jumper from junior guard Morgan Amy set the Greyhounds to the locker room with a 28-23 lead
  • The Rangers began the scoring in the second half before Amy drained a three-pointer. Moravian led by as many as five points while Drew eventually cut the deficit to a point at 38-37 with 3:21 on the clock. Junior guard Ashley Robinson hit a lay-up and Amy followed with another three-pointer for a six-point edge, and the Greyhounds led 47-39 after 30 minutes of action as sophomore forward Gracie Hezel sank a jumper in the lane in the waning seconds of the quarter
  • Moravian slowly extended the advantage in the fourth quarter, opening a game-high edge of 13 points at 56-43 on a lay-up from Osorio with 5:45 remaining. The Rangers closed within six points before Amy and Osorio each hit two free throws in the final 42 seconds to seal the victory 

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had three players in double figures led by Osorio, who had 18 points to go with eight rebounds, three blocked shots and a pair of steals. Yoegel finished with 15 points and five boards while Amy had 14 points and just missed a double-double with nine assists to go with four steals. Amy's nine assists tied her career high
  • Markowski contributed nine points and four rebounds while junior guard Madison Amy and Robinson both had three points with Madison adding four assists and three steals. Hezel finished with two points while freshman forward Brielle Guarente had three rebounds and two points and freshman guard Mikayla Anderson had two boards and a pair of steals
  • The Greyhounds forced the Rangers into 26 turnovers while committing just 11 miscues, and the Blue and Grey had a 22-7 edge in points off of turnovers
  • Drew had a 39-31 edge in rebounds but Moravian had a 16-13 advantage in offensive boards, and the Hounds had more offensive rebounds (16) than defensive rebounds (15) in the contest
